It's quite of a shame when a book about design is poorly designed itself. The layout is ok: each page features 1 to 3 projects and the way they use type. On top of each image you find the number of the project, name of the agency and the agency's country. But if you want the name of the fonts used (what I thought the book was all about), you must look at the index at the end. And on top of that, the index does not even present the projects by number but by agency's name which make it for a busy search. A shame since the projects presented are interesting, make for a good source of inspiration even if they lack a bit more explanations.
One of this book's main advantage is its low price.

Many many pages of different type treatments, colorful pages, great for inspiration. But beware! There is another edition of this book, smaller in dimension, without compromising the content or size of the photographs, and it's half the price!!

A good book, and if you're interested in paying double for extra white space, this is your book.

I agree with the 2 previous reviewers except that the mini edition mentioned by one is overwhelmingly crowded with small pictures, many of which can't be read and don't show the completed project in its entirety. I assume the photography is the same in the larger copy, but perhaps larger and less tightly packed for easier absorption.

I want to see details and complete projects to see how things tie together, I would also appreciate background information on the choices made, who they were for, what techniques were used and easier access to typeface names. For instance, were all these grungy type treatments being used to sell skateboards, and grunge-rock CDs? Or did someone try them to sell retirement condos?

I do think this is a great resource for typographic inspiration, the problem is this is just a remake of the same publish in 2005. I purchased this book with the assumption it was the an updated version of "1000 Type Treatments" but it is just in a different format. The photos are much smaller and less fit on the page than the one I already have. It is rather disappointing and a rather bad marketing job on behalf of Amazon! The problem it is since it was such a cheap by it is not worth selling it back, so now I am stuck with two of the same books with different covers and dimensions.

Be aware and make sure you are not buying something you already have.

The examples chosen are really nice. The way they place different examples on the pages makes it very pleasant to read. Most of the fonts used and other related information can be found at the back of the book.

It's a bit inconvenient that I have to go to the back of the book to check the information everytime but not on the same page. Different photos (e.g. different pages) of the same project should be marked explicitly.

the good: nice examples, good reference book

the bad: it doesn't mention fonts used in designs. it also uses the same example several times. pictures are to small and sometimes cropped in a weird way.

This is exactly the way a book on design should NOT be designed. And it's a shame because the editors found a lot of great work that would be inspiring if it weren't presented in an overwrought package with tightly-cropped photos on varying and illogically-colored backgrounds with poor labeling. It is simply too difficult to figure out exactly what one is looking at for the book to be enjoyable.

I glanced at the full-sized book in the book store before I bought the smaller version. The smaller version, while it measures 6x6, is really too small to be looking at these images. If you must buy this book, buy the larger size.

Looking more closely at the designs, they're not recent...they're from the late 1990s. The most current image I saw was from 2004 (it's now 6/2010). That's ancient history as far as graphic design goes. There's absolutely no background info on the samples either...no context whatsoever. The biggest faux pas though is that upon closer inspection, 90% of the type is boxy san serif display type...over and over and over again. You'd think no other style existed. It just gets old. While much of the design in the book is interesting, the typography...not so much. So buy this book for the design aspect but not necessarily for type inspiration.

I'd love to see a new "Type Treatments II" with a larger cross-section of typographic usage, and more recent examples.
