5.0 out of 5 stars Thorough, Informative, Academic and Practical Dec 19 2012
By Christopher D. Orear - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I purchased this commentary to supplement two others I used for a recent writing assignment on I Samuel 1-7. While I found something helpful in each of the texts I used, I found this one to be the most thorough and helpful. The style of insert boxes of information was distracting and busy, but the information in those boxes was very helpful in amplifying the commentary. I found Cartledge's commentary to be very informative and practical. He also takes on difficult questions about the text, providing information in order for the reader to process his or her own ideas about the meaning of the text. As pointed out in other reviews, Cartledge does include some reflections on the text that connect the the texts to a Christian understanding. In what reading I did, I did not find that excessive, but would acknowledge the legitimacy of that critique. I found the accompanying CD-ROM to be very helpful in the writing process. If this commentary is any reflection of others in the Smyth & Helwys series, I want to own them all.

2.0 out of 5 stars well researched but... April 22 2011
By Chris Greenwood - Published on Amazon.com

While I appreciate the archeological material in the commentary, the content itself does not do justice the wonder of a miracle working God. Too much of the commentary is spent explaining away Go's amazing supernatural work and projecting human explanations.

3.0 out of 5 stars Jesus should not be in a Hebrew text! Dec 3 2004
By anashenwrath - Published on Amazon.com

I used this book as a secondary source for a paper I wrote in a biblical history course. It was in the library under Old Testament History, yet there were smatterings of New Testament dogma throughout the whole thing! As a Jewish studies major, I found it frustrating to have to wade through someone else's doctrine (the author, it turns out, is a pastor) just to get to the facts. However, when I did find information relating to the actual Book of Samuel, it was well-written and informative. Also, the style of the book made it easy to pick out interesting facts, useful to me after spending so much time picking out the religious bias.
