5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent value for the money, Sep 14 2011

When this album was announced in 2000, a lot of Beatle fans wondered, "Why?" Most fans already owned these songs on the 1962-1966 (Red) Remastered and 1967-1970 (Blue) Remastered collections, not to mention the original albums/CDs, and The Beatles: 20 Greatest Hits [Vinyl LP] [Stereo] flopped in the early 1980s (although it did become a steady back-catalog seller later on).

Well, thanks to a shrewd marketing campaign by Apple and EMI that targeted younger listeners (which Apple needs to do more of, lest this great music die, before the "Glee" crowd turns it into hip-hop crap), BEATLES 1 became one of the best selling albums of all time, and led to the release of other career-spanning "number 1" CDs, such as Elv1s 30 #1 Hits, Number Ones by The Bee Gees, The #1's (Eco-Friendly Packaging) by Diana Ross and The Supremes, and other compilations such as The Rolling Stones' Forty Licks. Even old-time Beatle fans loved the album, because of the convenience of having 27 great #1 songs on a single CD, and the sound quality was far superior to most of the Beatles CDs available at the time.

Now, in 2011, BEATLES 1 appears again, using the 2009 remasters. This reissue simply brings this best-selling album in line with the rest of the catalog. The packaging has been upgraded, with a digipak (with the Apple logo on the flap) replacing the 2000 version's jewel case, and the booklet is now printed on thicker, glossier paper than the 2000 version. Some fans may question why more was not added this time (e.g., the B-sides, the non-U.S. and non-U.K. number ones, the solo number ones, a DVD of promo clips, etc.), but I don't think it was Apple's intention to rewrite history at this time.

I did not notice any significant differences in sonics between the 2000 and 2011 versions of this CD. Upon further review, the older version is a little louder in places, and two songs - "Can't Buy Me Love" and "A Hard Day's Night" - do sound slightly, though not overwhelmingly, better. So, if you have the 2000 version, there probably is no reason for you to upgrade to the new version, unless you are a collector like myself. But either way, this CD is excellent value for the money - 27 chart-topping classics by the greatest group ever. As George Martin wrote in the introduction, "A wonderful collection, and wonderful for me to have been there." Wonderful for us too, Sir George.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection sounding better., Sep 13 2011

This new version of their #1 hits uses the same remasters issued two years ago. Like the original, the first three tracks are in mono. The cardboard package is similar to the remasters only it's two-sided for this album and the booklet is practically identical to the original. The tracks here were chart-toppers in the US and/or UK and give an excellent overview of their extraordinary career even though it only scratches the surface. If you're a new fan, you found a great place to start. If you're a die-hard fan, it's not as essential but is great to have if you like the remasters better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Intro To The Beatles For Your Kids And Grandkids, Sep 21 2011

My teenage nephew and his classmates only have the vaguest idea of who "The Beatles" were and the high quality of music The Beatles created. Any real Beatles fan over the age of 50 has all of these songs in one form or another, or bought the original version of "1" when it was issued. But, this collection is so terrific, and such a good buy, Beatles fans should buy extra copies to keep at work, or in the car, and several more to give to nieces, nephew, and to the grandkids.

The original "raw" tapes were made beginning in 1962, so by the time of the 2009 remastering sessions, some of the original tapes were almost fifty years old. The remastering engineers have done a great job of restoring the Beatles sound...recreating what the original tapes sounded like five decades ago. Those original tapes have flaws, and some of those flaws will be audible to careful listeners, especially those with high quality headphones. However, people who are listening to the MUSIC will be thrilled. These are fine recordings of some of the best "pop" music of the past century.

And, what a bargain this collection is! I bought many of these songs when they were first released as Capitol singles. Back in 1964 and 1965, the price was a dollar for a single with an "A" side and a "B" side (although the Beatles sometimes gave their fans a present by including two "A" sides on a single). That meant I was paying fifty cents a song, back when a teenager was paid a dollar an hour at McDonalds. This collection still costs just fifty cents a song, five decades years later.

Give this Beatles collection to younger members of your family. Soon they will want more...tell them that next they need to hear "Rubber Soul", "Revolver", "Help", and "Abbey Road". You may cure them of their interest in whatever junk the music industry is pushing on teenagers this year.
