For some strange reason, this album seems to get a lot of attention and hype as being the best MO album. Although it has a few classics in the Midnight Oil catalog, it's definitely not their best album. All albums prior to Diesel and Dust show the band trying to find the right balance of melody and experimentation. Plus, for a band with a strong sense of guitars-drums-vocals, this album has too much sythesizer and electronic drum noodling.

I'd put this album in the center of a list of albums from best to worst. Blue Sky Mining, Diesel and Dust, and Earth Sun Moon all outshine this one.

This album is similar to Red Sails at Sunset. It has a couple of really strong songs, but is also somewhat inconsistent as a whole, and gets sort of bogged down in moody experimentation. I would rate this album, though, as being better than Red Sails.

Like Red Sails, 10,9,8... starts off with a song that really doesn't make sense as a opener. "Outside World" is basically a synthesizer song with no drums. It's kinda moody and dark. The second song though, "Only the Strong" rocks, so that's the real start of the album.

10,9,8... has the classic MO songs "Read About It", "Power and the Passion", and "US Forces", so that makes this album mandatory, unless you already have the 20000 Watt RSL compilation (especially the DVD version, which includes Read About It).

The rest of the songs are fairly good. The band would start putting out much stronger and consistent albums in a few years, starting with Diesel and Dust.

"diesel and dust" is one of my favourite albums of all time,but "10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1" really defines all that Midnight oil is loved and apriciated for - a portion of ambitious rock and great social commentary lyrics.
Peter Garret,the fighting Ecologist and Anti-globalist shouts out his opinion about politicians and weapon race (still actual message on famous "us forces"),war ("tin legs and tin mines),destroying of world ("short memory") and apocalypse ("scream in blue") with passionate memorable voice while his friends help him with effective Rock sound. But Midnight oil is not just only interesting riffs. On "outside world" they create flowing soundscape with a use of synth and some loops."scream in blue" is more progressive oriented song with heavy clymax at hte beginning and mellower hauntingly beautifull piano part in the end.Peter screaming in this song will make you thing about the world's dark future...
"10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1" is still their masterpiece,these 10 songs are perfectly recorded,composed and simply flawless without being synthetic,too simple or too complicated.It will make you dance,shout,headbanging,meditate,relax or just sit down and enjoy the power of music - Got the message?
