5.0 out of 5 stars FLAMING FLAMENCO! July 24 2007

AT LAST - and well worth the wait. Based on the Marguerite Duras novel - this odd journey deals with lust, murder, adultery, and yet more lust. Peter Finch as the straight-laced husband, Romy Schneider - the 'companion' and Mercouri - 'the wife' find themselves somewhere in a small village. A cheating wife has just been killed by her husband; now he is missing and the hunt is on. After the trio check into their hotel, Mercouri steps out on the balcony and .......

...the young Spanish actor is BRILLIANT in his scenes with Mercouri - she's also great as the 'sime-conscious drunk' during their confrontations..

Let's say it becomes rather intersting, until Finch and Schneider find themselves facing an odd dilemma ........ where to find Mercouri?

The close-ups are abundant, pity that all 3 have left us too soon.
Luminous personalities - great screen beauties -

Dassin/Duras at their best!

Intriguing film for people who like to follow the lives of troubled characters, a state that we can share, as no life runs smoothly through all experiences. Of the three main characters, Melina Mercouri's seems the most troubled. Peter Finch, the husband and Romy Schneider, the friend try to help her find peace within herself, causing the pursuit of their destinies to be stalled. A stormy night in a Spanish town where a murder has taken place gives fuel for the plot to develop, but the resolution is ambiguous.
There is enough in this film to give the aficionado satisfaction from more than one viewing.

2.0 out of 5 stars So much talent, but... Oct 8 2008
By Richard D. Reitzel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:DVD
I've been a real admirer of Dassin's work-- and Melina Mercouri is a force of nature, irresistable. But this movie fails at every level-- as narrative it makes no sense. And Mercouri crosses that fine line into being a Grotesque, a camp parody of herself. Many of Mercouri's lines are indistinguishable, even played over a high-end system. It's as tho' half the script was never shot and the film they had on hand was quickly thrown together into a "movie". So much talent involved here. A huge disappointment.

When oh when will they release the DVD of "Phaedra"--the crowning achievement in the Dassin/Mercouri output ? RR in Tucson
