Product Description

From Amazon

The 10 supermodels in the photographs on these pages are extraordinary, extended earthlings who look as if they've been pulled at both ends like saltwater taffy. If the book title seems to suggest that it is the ambitious photographer, fashion shutterbug Peter Lindbergh, who created them rather than they who inspired him with their raw material, well, let him dream. His 108 sensual and appreciative black-and-white photos do beautiful justice to these stunning young women. The only exception is Cindy Crawford, who looks zipper-lipped and white-bread American next to the likes of Helena Christensen, Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Tatjana Patitz, the adorable Claudia Sizzler--Schiffer--and Amber Valletta (who, for some reason, is always called "androgynous"). At 22, Valletta looks tired, as usual, but her gender identity is awfully clear. But let's not quibble; even Crawford is drop-dead gorgeous. It's easy to see why Lindbergh has been chosen so often to direct ad campaigns for top designers (including Karl Lagerfeld, who contributed an introduction to this book).

There is one color shot here, a delicate ad for Kate Moss's right nipple, apparently, as she reclines in spike-heeled, ice-white leather boots on a snowy polar bear skin that has a soft, fake look to it. But, as with most supermodel breasts, hers and those of the other cavorters in this freewheeling book leave the viewer a bit cold. Only Naomi Campbell, with her high-IQ-enhanced smile, exudes a deeper eros. Which makes one think again about who is by whom; perhaps it is Lindbergh, after all, with his gift for stark, '30s-inspired, Garboesque chiaroscuro, who has brought these posers' beauty into such striking focus. --Peggy Moorman

From Publishers Weekly

Published in conjunction with a traveling exhibition, this collection of photographs by fashion photographer Lindbergh is devoted to 10 famous supermodels?Naomi Campbell, Helena Christensen, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Kristen McMenamy, Kate Moss, Tatjana Patitz, Claudia Schiffer, Christy Turlington and Amber Valletta. For each model, Lindbergh presents a portfolio of pictures showing her in various moods and dramatic poses and includes a brief statement in which he attempts to define what makes her a memorable subject. Because he concentrates on the women, not the clothes, his work has unusual intensity and depth. At the same time, he shows the models in suggestive poses and various states of undress and includes a nude centerfold (the only color plate in the book), thus capturing the pornographic quality that characterizes much contemporary fashion photography. The technically sophisticated photographs are beautifully reproduced, but the layout of the text detracts from the appeal of the book; Lagerfeld's preface, for example, is printed in large capital letters that extend to the edges of the page, making it difficult to read.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice, April 2 2002

This review is from: 10 Women (Hardcover)
A really nice collection of photographs of 10 of the worlds most popular models. The book worked well in balck and white, and perhaps added to the feel of each photo. The small amount of text accompanying each of the models, giving a brief description of them, was a great touch and I found it intertesting. The photos are taken very much in a "fashion magazine" style, and work particularly well in that sense. The only thing I really thought was missing from the book as a whole was "something original". I'm not sure exactly what I might have been hoping for, but it left me wanting more. It however, is a book of fantastic photos of some of the best models of this era, taken by a very talented photographer who is obviously very in touch with the fashion industry. It would be a good book to sit back with in the afternoon with a cup of tea or coffee.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good learning material, great images, April 24 2000
This review is from: 10 Women (Hardcover)
A great book for learning a few things about shooting women with passion. Some images are off base, but most cut right to the heart. The images are also very diverse, as they cross cultural boundaries with the selection of models represented in the book. I think it is a good one, an eye opener, and for the money a great one!
