3.0 out of 5 stars Not too bad altogether. Sept. 24 2009
By Vicki H
Format:Paperback
This book is made for a fairly beginner pianist. It's alright, I enjoyed it a fair amount except for the fact that it is missing quite a few of my favorite christmas songs. This book has mainly Christian songs, nothing with Santa Clause or reindeer so if that's the sort of songs you are looking for they are not in here. The majority of the songs I did not recognize but that's not necessarily a bad thing if you like learning new songs for Christmas.

The one problem I do have with this book is that the melodies themselves are sort of awkward and some are untrue to the originals. That was sort of annoying when ever I came upon that. Some of the notes aren't quite on key either but that may be just following along the lines of being altered from the original melodies. This wasn't true for all of them but it definitely was for some. Granted this could also be because of the beginner level it's at which could account for some of the missing notes but still...

On the other hand, a good thing about this book was that it included a lot of verses other than just the first one or two which I thought was nice. There were actually some verses for a couple of the old classics that I hadn't remembered in a long time. It has all of them for most of the songs.

All in all not a bad book but there are others that I have enjoyed more thoroughly. This book also contains guitar chords.

I'm glad I took time to check the publisher's Web site, because I discovered that of the 100 titles included in this book, there are over 50 I've never heard of. To save you that step, I've done a copy/paste of the complete song list I found there, so you can see for yourself how many "old friends" and how many "strangers" you'd be getting if you were to order this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Favorites... and nice arrangements Jan. 1 2009
By Mom the Teacher - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book has a fantastic selection of Christian Christmas music! Our hymnal has lots of great songs, but there are so many good ones that they can't include them all. This book puts many popular songs together in one place. Not all the songs are Christian... Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy, Toyland, etc., but most are. They're easy for most adults pianists to sight-read which is a plus. Guitar chords are included and the layout of the font, etc. is great. I'm a church organist and many times people have thought that of course I would have the music to O Holy Night... or The Twelve Days of Christmas, etc. Now I can have many of the popular Christmas songs on hand. I highly recommend this book!

4.0 out of 5 stars Gather Round Dec 8 2009
By Ginevera - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
If you've pictured yourself in a Victorian Christmas setting with people gathered around the piano, this is a nice book for that. The book opens flat so it stays on the stand. It's true that there are some unfamiliar songs, but it could be a good opportunity to learn new and more obscure carols in addition to the well-loved favorites.

2.0 out of 5 stars Where are the songs we know and love? Jan. 10 2013
By J. Curtis - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I thought this songbook would be better based upon the other Hal Leonard songbooks I have purchased. There are far too many unfamiliar and hard to sing carols included here. I am not a youngster and I would wager that over half of them are unfamiliar to me.

3.0 out of 5 stars Easy to sight read-No frills Dec 13 2011
By Hugh695 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I was looking for the "perfect" Christmas songbook just so I could play some nice Christmas music when I was in the mood. I will say up front, that I am probably an intermediate player and am not ready for the advanced music that is often written for piano solos. I looked through so many books, ultimately going with this song book even though you couldn't "look inside." I should have never bought it without seeing it first. The arrangements are quite easy, but I would call them simple- because there is no flow. If you like playing music like from a hymnal, then save yourself some money, and get an old hymnal from your church. Also, another buyer commented on the fact that a lot of these songs you will have never heard of. That too is true. This book would probably be fine if you are just gathering around to sing carols. But I sure wouldn't want to play these arrangements in public, or if you do, you will need a lot of fill in.
