Innovations at home: Exceptional contemporary houses from Chile to Croatia to China

Designing private homes offers architects more freedom than corporate projects to express their ideas and try out new concepts. Conceiving living spaces is not without its own set of challenges, for which architects are forever looking for innovative solutions—rethinking the way we inhabit our home and live our daily lives is all part of the job when designing a house. Nowadays environmental concerns have become crucial in building sustainable structures, changing the playing field quite profoundly. This two-volume publication rounds up 100 of the world’s most interesting and pioneering homes from the past decade, featuring a host of talents both new and established, including John Pawson, Richard Meier, Shigeru Ban, Tadao Ando, Zaha Hadid, Herzog and de Meuron, Daniel Libeskind, Alvaro Siza, UNStudio, and Peter Zumthor.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not great March 18 2013

This set has A LOT of houses. It covers some of the main starchitects working on a less glamourous approach, since they had to shift from public and monumental spaces to the intimate and particular programs which is implied in the unifamiliar house.

Still, there is a LOT of information missing. There are some projects in the book that have 2 or 3 pictures... no sections, plans, they don't have anything.

After all, I'm happy with it. It has a good price and it is gonna help me out throughout my life.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected July 12 2013

Most of the architects are from Japan. Not very many designs that I can relate to or pass ideas on to my clients here in the US. Good table top book to browse through once or twice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product for the Price! Jan. 1 2013

I honestly thought this was a smaller book. I was more or less getting it to qualify for Super Saver Shipping on another item =P. Discovering that it was a 2-volume, large pictured, high quality books I was excited to go through it. I would definitely recommend this item to anyone with an architectural career, background, or even just an enthusiast.

4.0 out of 5 stars Total page-turner. Dec 29 2012

It's two volumes of beautiful pictures and descriptions of both the architect(s) and the design itself. I own many design books, some more for learning purposes, and others because I simply enjoy architectural eye candy. In this case, the books are larger with big color-print photos, and there are houses featured that I haven't seen before. It's not the ultimate best I've ever seen, but it's certainly far from the worst.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent March 6 2013

This collection of contemporary houses has given me ideas for retirement as well minor redecorating projects for now. Granted most homes in the collection are a bit out of my range right now but it gives me aspiration when cracking the books open.
