Book Description

Sep 20 2012
This country and its people are made of the same hardy stuff that makes our game and our league. The Grey Cup has helped unite our country for 100 years now. And it has revealed us, built our pride and our sense of Canadianness in annual tributes to effort, sweat and toil. But what does 100 years of history and cultural relevance add up to? When we Canadians look at the Grey Cup, we see far more than a gleaming football trophy; we see a reflection of ourselves. After its first years as an amateur challenge cup, the Grey Cup would go on to be awarded to the best football team in Canada, with Western challengers traveling back east to fall at the hands of the more established Toronto teams. That is, until a group of frustrated Winnipeggers paid an enormous sum during the Depression to buy up star players and bring the cup west for the first time. Following this, the games became about the pride of the country, East versus West, the national identity fought over the gridiron, all chronicled dutifully by bestselling author Stephen Brunt.

From the birth of the modern CFL in 1958, through the dynastic Edmonton Eskimos and into the nineties, attempted USA expansion, franchise re-birth in Montreal, 100 Grey Cups has it all: behind-the-scene anecdotes, never-before-seen photographs, and unprecedented access to the CFL archives. It is a must-have for all fans of this national tradition

I have owned almost every book on the Grey Cup that is out there. This is the most beautiful and detailed Grey Cup book that I have ever seen and read.
It is also the largest book about the Grey Cup that I have ever seen.
In this case , you CAN judge a book by it's cover. The cover of this book in real life is just so stunning!!!
To be fair to the other Grey Cup books , this book has the advantage of being up-dated to [and includes] the 99th Grey Cup. The breath taking pictures in this hard cover book [23.8 x 1.8 x 28.6 cm] are worth the price of this book alone. There are many large [full page & double page] pictures that I have never seen before in both colour and in black and white. You also see some funny pictures of dressed up CFL fans , GREY CUP programs & GREY CUP tickets , ect...
What makes this particular book also so impressive is the detail of the GREY CUP stats and awards , ect. It has many a stats pages dedicated to things like , LAST-MINUTE GREY CUP HEROES and a stats page on many GREY CUP HIGH LIGHTS with the key moments in the games explained on an easy to read chart , ect...
If you think that you have read and seen everything about the Grey Cup , think again.
Every CFL team's GREY CUP history is covered including the early college years and the Canadian Football Championships BEFORE the first GREY CUP in , 1909 , in great detail. They also have the Grey Cup histories of OTTAWA & BALTIMORE. This book also explains why American football stars came to play in , Canada.
The reading is easy , sometimes very funny , sometimes sad but always very inspiring. There is also NO CFL bashing in this book.
If you are a CFL fan and you want the Bible of our GREY CUP game , this fine book is a beautiful Canadian treasure detailing a big part of OUR own culture & sports history. WELL DONE , Stephen Brunt...
Enjoy : 100 GREY CUPS : This Is Our Game.
It certainly is our game and WE as a great Nation are better for it!!!
Here is to another , 100 years of CFL Footbal!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful tribute to a Canadian game Oct 23 2012
Format:Hardcover
A moving, nostalgic and entertaining tribute to 100 years of our game. It's a coffee table book worth its weight in gold (and, trust me, it has a real heft to it). With a voice that is both precise and cheeky, and photos that captivate, Brunt's book captures the enduring spirit of Canadian football.
