This is a photo gallery of funky and somewhat outrageous art objects made from recycled found materials in all media. Johnson (art, Coll. of the Redwoods) assembled this collection of works by established studio artists as a source of ideas for crafters. -- Library Journal, February 15, 2010

1000 Ideas for Creative Reuse,

This review is from: 1000 Ideas for Creative Reuse: Remake, Restyle, Recycle, Renew (Paperback)
I am torn on this one.On one hand it is a great visual book full of many clever ideas and great photos. On the other hand however, although the photos are great, there is no explanation or technique explained at all. That is disappointing. There is also one section on "couture" which I would have rather not had in the book, only because many of the items such as dresses/caps/hats etc. would have been better served in a monthly ladies craft magazine. If the author felt that this section was REALLY that necessary(we are talking about maybe 200 of the 1,000 ideas)perhaps they should have been nearer the back of the book. Honestly though...kill the majority of that section, find a few other ideas(lots more out there) with techniques or some type of explanation and this book would have been a total winner.

There are certainly many visual examples in this book, but it lacks the basic information that would make it a great book. At times there are versions of the same thing, just more of the same.I love to learn from my books. Be it more about the artist, the materials or techniques used, the inspiration that led to how things are made. To find any information about the pictured items, you have to turn to the final pages to again be dissapointed by the very basic list of names, nothing else, no useful information whatsoever. The pictures and variety are interesting, but.... I found the book dissapointing.

Full disclosure... About a year ago I submitted four of my own bottle cap jewellery designs for this book. My work was selected and I was told that I'd be notified when the book was available for purchase. So I waited ... and even though I follow Garth's blog (ExtremeCraft) and know he does great work, I still entertained the thought that perhaps this project was merely a scheme to sell books (1000 artists selected = 1000 books sold, right?). Not so. I picked up the book over the weekend and let me tell you - I CANNOT PUT IT DOWN. Seriously, my husband and I are both so inspired by this book and the few friends we've shown it to are supremely impressed too. The quality is amazing (both of the artists chosen and the actual book). And it's a bigger book than I imagined it would be - it's definitely a coffee table book. For anyone with an interest in any kind of DIY reuse crafting - furniture, jewellery, clothing, art - it's all here and it will INSPIRE YOU to make something. Way to go Garth - great contribution to the crafting community.
