I'm impressed with Lil Rev. A skilled musician, he has a way of making something difficult so eloquent, so simple. That is the mark of a skilled teacher. This book fits that mold.
I'm a ukulele player of about 6 months. I have the basic chords down, and have learned some simple strums. Lil Rev's DVD (Hal Leonard ukulele DVD) helped immensely in that regard. Now, along comes this great book. Blues and jazz and vamps and turn-arounds. And, even at this economical price, it has an included CD.
I find it to be precisely what I need at this stage in my training. If you can read simple uke-guitar tabs, you can use this book. Doing some of these bluesy licks, which are the basis of rock and roll, can make you seem like a pro. Just stir in your own strumming patterns, and repeat.
I have books on tabs for famous songs, and have done the online chords for famous uke songs available for free. But, I have to say, the repetition of these 3-4 chord licks, plus plenty of picking samples, is a lesson unto itself. It is teaching me the pairings of certain notes and chords with one another (e.g A, Dm, Em) that will stick with me as I move forward in my learning, without the pain of too much theory. I respectfully disagree with another reviewer of this book: even if one were an accomplished ukulele player, to work through the riffs in this book is sure to reveal some new combinations. And for the price, which is remarkably low, this book is worth every penny. My son is an experienced (five years of lessons) guitarist, and he could use the chords and riffs (with guitar fingering, of course) to pound out some neat sounding blues and rock basic structures--even he found this book fun and educational.
My son takes guitar lesson at about fifteen bucks for a half hour. For about that price, this book and CD will have you learning for weeks and weeks. If one were to learn one of these 101 samples daily for 101 days, in less than four months, they'd be a significantly betyter uke player. That's my goal, and I thank the author of this book, Lil Rev, for the lesson.
Highly recommended. !!
