From the Author

As the author of $18 and UNDER, my job is to paint as accurate a portrait of what you should expect of a certain establishment: the great, the bad and the run-of-the-mill.

From the Inside Flap

When most people think of Philadelphia, venerable tradi-tions such as cheesesteaks, soft pretzels, scrapple and the toughest sports fans in the land come to mind. Over the past five years, our town has received as much national press for its tremendous restaurants as it has for its overzealous Eagles enthusiasts. The question is, how long will this renaissance last? Hardly a week passes without a couple of restaurant openings.

Just how does one decide on a restaurant with the plethora of options available? On special occasions, many of us will splurge on haute cuisine, yours truly included. But these occasions are far and few between--perhaps once every year or two.

Fortunately for us Philadelphians, we needn't break the bank to enjoy a fantastic night out on the town. This is precisely what the $18 and UNDER concept is about--Reasonable Dining and Entertainment. It's been describ-ed as a dining guide for the average person to use on any given night of the week. It reviews over 275 estab-lishments, each with an average entrée price of $18 and less.

There were, however, a few exceptions made, such as listing Philadelphia Fish & Co for its $5 eat-at-the-bar menu. That is reasonable dining at its best. Additionally, there are a few places listed that are either priced out, or have no “real” food whatsoever, but are included for their entertainment value.

This is, after all, more than just a dining guide. $18 and UNDER gives you the insider on: where the singles are; who has TVs to watch ballgames; who has quality beer; and much more.

The places reviewed in $18 and UNDER are diverse. They range from the trendsetters to the traditional; from the local pubs to the hidden gems. Each restaurant is evaluated on its food, service, décor and atmosphere--the four basics. A restaurant ought to be taken in its proper context. Apples-to-apples. Reviews are based in comparison with restaurants of the same genre. Bridgid's and LeBus, two casual café types, are rated in comparison with one another, but not with Jim's Steaks. Each restaurant, bar or lounge is categorized by the section of the city in which it's located, then by style of food. For example, The Mexican Post is listed in Old City for its location, then under Mexican for its food.

There are places listed in $18 and UNDER that do indeed have dirt-cheap prices. But the book focuses predominately on reasonable dining, not cheap-eats.

I am proud to mention that $18 and UNDER is in its third edition. The sections of Philadelphia included in the guide are the more visited parts of the city for dining. It is intended to enhance your dining experiences. Here's to many great meals.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cheap eats!, April 16 2001

This review is from: $18 & Under: The Guide to Reasonable Dining And Entertainment in Philadelphia, 2002 Update (Paperback)
I highly recommend this book for Philadelphians who love to eat out but don't have the budget to match their good taste. Similar to Zagats but with less pretension, it is full of great synopses of restaurants throughout the city arranged by cuisine and neighborhood. Brief, yet thoughtful reviews definitely help with the question, "Where do you want to go for dinner?" My only complaint is that is is not quite as well organized and comprehensive as Zagat's Philadelphia.
