YA-A novel set in Ireland at the time of the Easter Rebellion. Llywelyn tells the tale of 15-year-old Ned Halloran, a young Titanic survivor who lost both of his parents in that disaster. Upon his return to his native Ireland, he becomes embroiled in its rapidly changing political scene. The headmaster of his school is a renowned scholar and also a rebel and patriot for the Irish cause. Ned acts as a courier for the rebels, becoming more and more supportive of their struggle. The young man's coming-of-age is complicated by his feelings of nationalism, the love of several women, and his rescue of a young orphan during a street battle. YAs will get caught up in the excitement of this epic novel and root for Ned as he tries to save his comrades and fights side by side with the woman he loves.

High Praise to Morgan Llywelyn!,

This wonderful work of historical fiction is based on the 1916 Irish Rebellion, known as the Easter Rising.Were introduced to the main character Ned Holloran, a 15-year-old survivor of the sinking of the Titanic. Neither of his parents survive. He is given the choice to stay in the United States with his sister Kathleen and her new husband. He chooses to go back to Ireland, where he attends an Irish school lead by Padraic Pearse, who is a scholar, poet, and rebel for the Irish cause. Ned gains a new appreciation for Ireland and it's culture and gets involved in the rebellion. Llywelyn weaves the true facts and real life historical people of the rebellion with her fictional character Ned Halloran seamlessly. She introduces us to the amazing Irish history and people of the time in an informative and entertaining way. This is the first book in an Irish Century series. I can hardly wait to read the next one, 1921: The Great Novel of the Irish Civil War!

I enjoyed this novel very much, and not only because of its strong characters and riveting plot. Morgan Llywelyn entertains while she teaches, and I learned a great deal about Irish history and the fundamental reasons for the fractious state of affairs that exist today in the north. After reading 1916, I went on to read the other two books in Llywelyn's series, 1921 and 1949. Readers who enjoy 1916 are likely to enjoy the other two books as well.

I must be honest, I had this book on a shelf for a year before I actually read it, but once started I could not put it down! Sadly, Ireland's history is glossed over at best in American schools, and I was only vaguely familiar with Ireland's fight for independence. This book was enough to satisfy my love of a good novel, and cunningly interweaves fictional characters through documented history. I was a bit thrown off by the footnotes at first, but by the time I finished the book, I was interested enough to actually look up some of the titles to learn more about the Easter Rising. I am now reading the second in this series (I was very happy to learn that there are two more books beyond 1916!) and will be bringing the last in the series with me when I travel to Ireland next month! A great way to dip into history without being bogged down by dry facts.
