These Guys were Great Long Before "These Eyes" and "American Woman", May 10 2008
About five years ago I stumbled upon this CD while browsing in a retail CD outlet. I could hardly believe my luck. This was a collection of twenty-four early Guess Who singles and album cuts with some real rarities thrown in for good measure. For those of us who lived in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada the Guess Who were local rock royalty. It was hard to believe that a band that we could see play at one of our local community clubs had released singles that we could hear on the radio. Even more astounding was that "Shakin All Over" had made the Billboard charts in the United States. With that being said a couple of years later I traded this CD in for cash thinking that I could buy another copy in the future. This turned out to be easier said than done. I greatly missed this CD and began shopping around for another copy. Alas, one was not to be found. Fortunately, a sales person at a CD outlet recommended that I try looking for it at Amazon.ca. With much gratitude I was able to order the "Shakin' All Over" CD from Amazon. Needless to say I will not be trading in this CD again. I should point out that my favorite period in rock history was the garage band phenomena from 1965-1966. Yes, I own the Nuggets box set too. The "Shakin All Over" CD features the garage rock classic "Shakin'All Over" single release. This album also features both Chad Allan and Burton Cummings singing lead on different tracks. My favorite songs on this album are "Shakin'All Over", "Tuff E Nuff", "Believe Me", "Clock On the Wall", "It's My Pride","Baby Feeling", "Use your Imagination" and "Flying on the Ground" is Wrong". My only complaint with this album is that it does not include four of my favorite early Guess Who single releases,"His Girl", "Tossin' and Turning", the Canadian version of "Stop Teasing Me" and "This Time Long Ago". Fortunately, "His Girl" and "This Time Long Ago" can still be found on the CD "This Time Long Ago".
God bless and I hope you enjoy this early Guess Who collection as much as I do,
Ken Stewart

Early Guess Who Garage Sounds, Sep 21 2001
Here are the early recordings (and Sundazed undoubtedly picked the best of 'em) by The Guess Who. Their cover of Johnny Kidd & The Pirates' "Shakin' All Over" certainly shook up radio in that great rock year 1965. Unfortunately, everything else kinda suffered in comparison, but there are some real gems here, such as "Use Your Imagination" (previously unreleased), a very good cover of The Hollies' "You Know He Did", "Gonna Search", and "It's My Pride", with a terrific vocal by brand new member Burton Cummings, who quickly took over lead vocal chores when Chad Allan (who sang "Shakin'") started suffering throat problems. Excellent liner notes, giving us a history of this early incarnation of the group. As much as I like some of the group's RCA recordings, these show a grittier, rawer sound, and are a real treat, especially for garage band fans. You'll skip some of the tracks (mainly due to rather weak lyrics), but more than half of this CD is really rockin'.
