Sony Legacy Mini LP Box Set, Sep 3 2010

Mini LPs are on heavy card stock, nicely done. No individual booklets but there is a booklet included with all the cover art and track listings. Copyright is 2010. No indication about the remastering but I found the CDs to be sound better than the original CDs. The River is a double gatefold. The box that this comes in is very sturdy. I was impressed. I prefer the mini LPs to the standard old jewel cases with the disc logo in the right hand corner. Nice upgrade, especially for Nebraska and The River.

NOT REMASTERED! Don't buy for better sound quality!, Oct 8 2010

Horribly disappointed. Compared each to the original Columbia cd's from late 80's early 90's. There was no sonic difference other than, inexplicably, Nebraska was SLOWER. One of the two versions I have is wrong. What a rip. If you have to have all the Bruce's NOW, buy it. Otherwise, wait for quality reissues like the Born to Run Box and The Promise. Ugh - waste of my money...

Springsteen Collection, Sep 2 2010

As a long time fan holding onto original vinyl copies of Springsteen's pre-Tunnel of Love recordings, I was pleased to discover this box set. The music contained within is extraordinary, without doubt 5/5 material, reflecting Springsteen's growth as an artist, from early, wordy Dylan clone to his present day status as "The Boss". What I do feel a need to review is the actual packaging. The box itself is simple yet handsome and the cds contained within are housed in mini-LP replicas of the original vinyl. So far so good but on closer inspection, here's where the problems with this collection begin. Gatefolds are not reproduced (with the exception of The River, a 2-LP collection not originally released in a gatefold!), so we miss Born to Run's iconic wraparound sleeve (Greetings from Asbury Park, NJ, also suffers from this, but at least the lyrics here are reproduced). Also, none of the inner lyric (except as noted above) or picture sleeves have been reproduced, either in the cd cases or the accompanying booklet. In fact, the booklet is completely redundant, simply copying the front record covers and some rudimentary session info contained on the back covers. Why did Sony not go the extra mile to reproduce the COMPLETE original vinyl packages, like the recent, highly celebrated Japanese mini-Lp reissues? Although Sony should be commended for offering this collection at such a low cost (around $40 compared to the Beatles Stereo box at around $150!) surely most fans would have spent the extra $5 or so for the extra attention to details. Regardless, this is an excellent bargain introduction to one of the great American artists of the past 50 years.
