There are few producers in electronic music able to work with the sound of a relentless 909 kick drum and sound innovative. That small group includes Jeff Mills, Robert Hood and the constellation of producers gathered together on Plus 8 Classics 1990-1997. This hugely experimental yet accessible set is part nostalgia trip for devotees of tribal, minimalist techno, part swansong for Canadian DJ/producers Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva's now defunct label. Fortunately Hawtin and his partner are right when he describes these songs as classics. Each one works as an awesome testament to the middle school of Techno, the early to mid-1990s. While o.l.d.vs n.e.a.u's "Octaves & Tremulos" comes closest to blissed-out, most of the tracks on this album keep an unerring eye on the dancefloor and it's rigorous demands. For instance, Kenny Larkin's "Spike" cuts deep with elastic basslines and warm Detroit chords that caress you like honey, the tune wiggling it's dirty way to the end. Meanwhile, Hawtin appearing under his infamous Plastikman moniker is responsible for the hard, banging but strangely beautiful "Spastik", a staple of every self-respecting techno DJ in the 1990s. Noisy Dutch DJ, Speedy J's track, "Technarchy" doesn't go against the grain of its name and Larkin's "Colony" at first hints at sci-fi surf dub before plummeting into squelching funk. There are hundreds of compilations in this vein, but this is a genuinely state-of-the-art manifesto for cutting-edge techno. --Maxine Kabuubi

a compilation of great importance tp the techno fraternity Nov 21 2000

plus 8 is one of the most influential and consistent pure techno labels around, and this 2 cd compilation is a summation of the label's conceptual achievements and pure, visceral dancefloor kicks.

hawtin and acquaviva's seminal 'spastik' remains the vital blueprint for the sheffield bleep scene, and tracks like 'dimension intrusion' and 'f.u.2' both by f.u.s.e., define both the detroit sound and many future UR releases.

however, it has to be said that to the latecomer, (got to get a bit of hierarchy in here!!) some of the earlier plus 8 material may sound a little demented or rudimentary.

but in the end, no outsider could hope for a better introduction to the beauty of purist techno. to the already initiated, it's a timely reminder of how the undrground has progressed, and a chance to update all those scratched and worn 12s for two very fine cds.

Evolution in Electronica Nov 14 2000

This version of Plus 8 Classics is the Novamute version which is slightly different than the US domestic release. It is a double Cd with vol. 1 and vol. 2, while the US release is in three seperate CD issues. I looked up the track differences, and it there are 7 tracks on this issue not found on the 3 US volumes. This music itself on this issue is fantastic. Although I already have both the Plastikman cuts, the other stuff I had not heard before. Being a fan of Kenny Larkin and Ken Ishii (Utu), it is nice to hear material from them. Some of the standout stuff comes from Speedy J, especially the Patterns Remix track. very intense but sublime. I am pretty sure that this is not on any of the US issues, so if you want some more Plus 8 material, this is one place you can find it.
