Bonamassa live at The Royal Albert Hall,
This review is from: 2009: Live From The Royal Albert Hall (Audio CD)
Joe Bonamassa live at the Royal Albert Hall has become a gem in my music collection. It's a masterful recording in a world class venue. Joe and the band deliver jaw dropping musicianship. I'd first heard of this CD on PBS. Now I'm telling everybody I know to check it out. I have tickets to see Joe and the band at the Wang Theatre in Boston in November. That'll be this blues fans highlight of the year. Would like to meet him someday and personally thank him for terrific blues.

I just recently stumbled onto Joe Bonamassa's music care of a short Palladia TV segment showing some of the video from this concert. I'd heard of him before but never really followed his work. Well...I'm glad to call myself a new fan. This guy is simply an incredible guitar player and overall musician. Wonderful fret work, phrasing, and tone...great voice...flawless performance...amazing!Now that I've bought a few of his studio albums (e.g., The Ballad of John Henry, You & Me, and So It's Like That) and listened through a few times it's like a shot from out of the park...what cave have I been hiding in to have missed hearing this guy before now? In my opinion, Bonamassa has certainly picked up the mantle of blues guitar hero...following in the footsteps of greats like Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eric Clapton (who makes a guest appearance on this recording), Jimi Hendrix, and others. But that's just the Blues/Rock aspect of what he's doing. There's definitely a B.B. King feel throughout and he fuses it with several other blues and jazz elements that just work so well together. The energy is vibrant and leaves you with a good feeling at each listen. It's clear that he loves what he's doing. His soloing varies from traditional pentatonic blues with sweet bends and vibrato all the way across the spectrum to Eric Johnson-esque fireworks that leave you stunned. I'm a guitar player and it's all very inspirational to me! His band turns in an excellent performance as well and the whole package just comes across as polished and professional. While watching through the video again yesterday - I saved it on DVR :-) - I kept thinking how overwhelming it must have been to play such an arena. But Bonamassa jams it out like he owns the place and the audience was just loving it. Good stuff and highly recommended! 30 of 30 people found the following review helpful

A Little Embarrassed,

I'm a little embarrassed to admit that, after being an ardent fan of outstanding blues guitarists over the years, I'd never heard of Joe Bonamassa, until I stumbled onto his "Live From Albert Hall" concert on Palladia television the other night. I was captivated the moment he took the stage, wondering who this "unknown" must be, and watched in fascination as his performance evolved over the one-hour edited version of the concert. His guitar skills are phenomenal, his voice is distinctively expressive, his style is pure class, and his interpretation of the music brings with it a poignancy, smoothness and depth found in very few of his contemporaries. I am delighted to have discovered his music! 41 of 44 people found the following review helpful

Live from Royal Albert Hall,
By Tim - Published on Amazon.com
Joe is one of the most amazing guitarist of modern day; Playing Royal Albert Hall has been Joe's dream since he first picked up a guitar. I stumbled across Joe's music this past year while looking around at some blues music; after purchasing one album, I immediately picked up the rest of his albums; each album is unique..some deeper into blues, some deeper into rock..all excellent..He is now a top-5 favorite artist of all time for me...Another notable point, Joe's vocals are also amazing and now stand out as much as his playing. I own both the DVD and album of Live from the Royal Albert Hall; they are a fantastic tribute to his 20-year career as a musician. |
