Pinchbeck, journalist and author of the drug-riddled psychonaut investigation Breaking Open the Head, has set out to create an "extravagant thought experiment" centering around the Mayan prophecy that 2012 will bring about the end of the world as we know it, "the conclusion of a vast evolutionary cycle, and the potential gateway to a higher level of manifestation." More specifically, Pinchbeck's claim is that we are in the final stages of a fundamental global shift from a society based on materiality to one based on spirituality. Intermittently fascinating, especially in his autobiographical interludes, Pinchbeck tackles Stonehenge and the Burning Man festival, crop circles and globalization, modern hallucinogens and the ancient prophesy of the Plumed Serpent featured in his subtitle. His description of difficult-to-translate experiences, like his experimentation with a little-known hallucinogenic drug called dripropyltryptamine (DPT), are striking for their lucidity: "For several weeks after taking DPT, I picked up flickering hypnagogic imagery when I closed my eyes at night ... In one scene, I entered a column of fire rising from the center of Stonehenge again and again, feeling myself pleasantly annihilated by the flames each time." Pinchbeck's teleological exploration can overwhelm, and his meandering focus can frustrate, but as a thought experiment, Pinchbeck's exotic epic is a paradigm-buster capable of forcing the most cynical reader outside her comfort zone.

Rambling but interesting, it's a personal account of a "channeled" episode that seems to come to Daniel Pinchbeck from Quetzalcoatl, the legendary feathered serpent, and perhaps the teacher of mankind...and perhaps a prophet of what is to come as the Mayan calendar comes to its end in 2012. Will it bring cataclysm? Earthly upheaval,? Social revolution? Personal enlightenment? Best read in context with Pinchbeck's "Breaking Open the Head", his tale of exploratory use of traditional hallucinogenic medicines. This book is sometimes too personal for general public interest, and here and there it does not hang together, still, it's intriguing.

I don't normally stop reading a book after 50 pages, but in this case I had to make an exception. How anyone could confuse drug-induced visions for higher levels of thought is beyond me. Obviously, Pinchbeck is looking for meaning in a life that doesn't have any. Save your time and money by giving this book a wide berth.

I was dragged in by the title, I have an interest in the Mayan calendar, and thought this might be interesting. I think a far more apt title would be 2012 - the peurile ramblings of a loser. When a book starts with chapters about how the author has done all sorts of mind-altering drugs like that is a testament as to his credibility, it's not a good sign. There are some references to events and cycles that touch on the subject of a change in 2012, but they are disjointed and really don't work. Then there are shifts to what seems to be a rambling journal about the author leaving his wife and child to go lie in crop circles, hit on other women, look for better drugs, and can't figure out why his relationship is going away.
sheesh. I wish to have several hours of my life refunded.
