20 Years Of Great Musical Memories,
By Paul S. Power "Music Reviewer" (Nova Scotia, Canada) - See all my reviews (TOP 100 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: 20th Ann. Collection Album (Audio CD)
A fitting way to start off this review would be by quoting Bob Seger; "Twenty years now. Where'd they go?" I'm sure the four founding members of The Barra MacNeils have that same feeling as they look back on two decades of writing, arranging, recording and performing. At one time there were two Royal Families of Cape Breton Music but unfortunately fate dealt a harsh card to The Rankin Family and took an irreplaceable part of the musical tapestry that makes this Island known around the world for it's true love of traditional music. If you count the DVD that was released in 2001, this CD makes it a baker's dozen of recordings the Sydney Mines family has released. Over the years the only major change in the line up was the addition of the younger brothers Ryan and Boyd, who are also members of Slainte Mhath. In some Cape Breton circles this band was affectionately known in their early years as "The Baby Barras". When I wrote a review for their 2005 CD "All At Once" I said that "Dance With Me Daily" was possibly the most beautiful song I had ever heard Lucy sing and it's nice to see it included here. The collection would not be complete without the inclusion of Kyle's stirring mining anthem "Coaltown Road" and "The Island" fires up that unique patriotism that only a Cape Bretoner can truly understand. Throughout the disc, great songs abound; "My Heart's In The Highlands", "Darling Be Home Soon", "In The Wink Of An Eye", "Willie C", "Rattlin' Roarin' Willie" and many more, two dozen to be exact. This Collection would be a perfect Christmas gift, especially to send away to those who can't get home for the holidays. It's a little slice of what makes Cape Breton what it is. Don't forget, the band will be staging their Christmas show at The Savoy Theatre on December 22nd. And this CD proves that when it comes to great traditional music, there is indeed a Santa Claus.

I had the pleasure of attending a small town visit by the "Barra Mac Neils". Their music is both joyful and filled with local songs and stories - a pure delight!
