Best known today as the series that helped launch Johnny Depp to stardom, Stephen J. Cannell's 21 Jump Street was also one of the first hit programs for the fledgling Fox network, a status that lasted for most of its five-year run (1987-91), thanks to its engaging mix of youth culture and police drama. As outlined in the pilot, Depp's baby-faced Ofc. Tom Hanson is transferred to the special Jump Street division, a unit that utilized young cops to infiltrate juvenile crime. Unlike many of Fox's youth-oriented shows of the period (i.e., Beverly Hills 90210), Jump Street took its stories seriously, and addressed numerous social issues in its episodes; though some of the fashions and slang seem dated, the program remains entertaining decades later. The Jump Street set compiles all 13 episodes of the debut season, including the two-part pilot; the solid extras feature commentary by co-star Peter DeLuise, as well as interviews with fellow Jump Street officers Dustin Nguyen, Holly Robinson Peete, and Steven Williams (whose Captain Fuller replaced Frederic Forrest's Jenko halfway through the first season), as well as the prolific Cannell. --Paul Gaita

5.0 out of 5 stars Ah...good ol' season 1, Aug 18 2008
This review is from: 21 Jump Street: The Complete First Season (DVD)
This is where it all started....5 years of 21 jumpstreet goodness! This season starts off a little less than I expected...the change to Captain Fuller made it the show I remembered. It only took one episode to see the chemistry between the jumpstreet cops. It is worth checking out where it all started. All the characters are still learning how to be themselves (and boy...Johnny Depp is very young!) and learning how to play others. There is also a great commentary from Peter DeLuise. Watch it...you'll watch the entire series in a different light. When I finished watching this series I found myself immediately putting it back in...starting at season 1. That should say something.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it, but HADN'T seen the ORIGINAL version!, July 15 2005

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: 21 Jump Street: The Complete First Season (DVD)
I had never seen 21 Jump Street when it was aired 'cause I live in Italy. I'm a huge Stargate SG-1 fan, so I bought the show 'cause Peter DeLuise was in it. I LOVED it, it's fun and not boring at all, and touches some serious issues quite well.

That said, I'm quite annoyed with the people who put it on DVD... I've experienced "music-changes" on the Quantum Leap Season 2 box set and I admit that in some occasions it REALLY made me mad... what the h**l are people thinking??? Just put the ORIGINAL music and UNCUT episode d**n it!!! I AM WILLING TO PAY A BIT MORE SO THE STUPID MUSIC INDUSTRY GETS THEIR SHARE, BUT I, AS A CUSTOMER, WANT THE COMPLETE (!!!!!) SHOW. Sorry for shouting.

And as far as the word "ass" being dubbed over... I read somewhere that THAT had been done already when the show aired. If that's the case, ok. If not... we get shows for teens like Dawson's Creek and Charmed (no offence to either show), nowadays... they have pretty heavy stuff there: do we really need to dub over the word "ass"????

Still, buy the dvd, I think it's worth it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Brought back memories, Jan 2 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: 21 Jump Street: The Complete First Season (DVD)
I watched the entire first season and extras of this set in 2 days, i was hooked as soon as the pilot started. This brought back tons of memories of my teenage years, seeing the clothes, the hair, hearing the music, it was all great.

For me the show still holds up even today, i've watched old reruns of the dukes of hazzard or the a-team and ask myself what the heck i use to like about them, but with 21 JS i didn't feel the cheesiness as i did with the others. Of course the show is not as dark or violent as if it would be if it was made today, but change the clothes, the hair and the music and i think the show would still fit in today.

The only thing i didn't like about the set was the menues because it keeps playing the first 15 seconds of the team song over and over and over and over... Which kind of gets on your nerves when your looking through the episode, scene and extra selections.
