Product Description

From Amazon.co.uk

It's a rare trick to uphold the sacred tenets of rock & roll while simultaneously reinventing them. But over the course of their 21 Singles, compiled here, the Jesus and Mary Chain did just that.

When the first, "Upside Down", emerged on Creation in 1984, the template was set. The Reid brothers who anchored the band would take the idea of sullen, black-leather-clad rebellion to a darker and more inhospitable place than anyone before them. Even now, the early Mary Chain singles sound astounding, the way pop and the avant-garde are mangled together in them so beautifully. But 21 Singles goes far beyond these, through another 14 years of protean glumness, patchy albums and, fortunately, many excellent singles. It proves, once and for all, that the Mary Chain's forte was the three-minute pop thrill, the precisely calibrated jukebox hit. An uncanny number of them--"Some Candy Talking", "Sidewalking", "Reverence"-- remain among the very best of the past 20 years. And the more slack moments still have their uses: to render futile the entire careers of artless impersonators such as Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, for a start.

The Mary Chain's last two singles, from 1998, "I Hate Rock'n'Roll" and "I Love Rock'n'Roll", neatly close affairs: bitter and celebratory; consumed and confused by music and the impulse to make it, which has driven them for so long. This band were genius, and this is why.--John Mulvey

Chronique amazon.fr

--Philippe Margotin

5.0 out of 5 stars Genius that was underappreciated, Aug 4 2008
By Rones Bones (Ottawa, Ontario) - See all my reviews
While I do not own this Best Of, I can assure you the track selection is fantastic. Why more people don't listen to this group/the Reid bros is beyond my ability to comprehend. This is real music: raw, moody, and cynical. None of their albums were ever alike, their sound always pushing their Velvet Underground-inspired, minimalist rock n roll to another area or level, with a despondent attitude all the way. Many music fans are incapable of wrapping their ears around this band. Why? I can't figure out. This band makes many of their contemporaries seem insignificant or amateur in my opinion. This is the real stuff. If you haven't checked out this release or any of their others, do yourself a favour and do so. This Best Of is a great starting point.

5.0 out of 5 stars 21 Reasons Why This Band Rocked, Jun 26 2002
By J. M. Zuurbier (Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Jesus and Mary Chain remain to be one of my favorite bands, its unfortunate they broke up. However this compilation 21 SINGLES should do more than just satisfy the cravings for fans, it should remind them of what a great band they once were (as if they needed reminding). In comparison to bands which are popular today like Nickleback, Sum 41, Creed, etc, its amazing how lacking in quality they are. Jesus and Mary Chain possesed a quality which is nowhere to be found on the scene today, and its a shame. Among highlights here include You Trip Me Up, April Skies, Somtimes Always, Never Understand, I hate Rock and Roll, I Love Rock and Roll, Happy When It Rains, Someday Talking, Darklands, Almost Gold, Far Gone and Out, Reverence and more. Overall here are 21 reasons why this band rocked, and 21 reasons why there isn't a band like this today.
