Product Description

From Amazon.com

Such a simple idea--yet so fiendishly complex in the execution. 24, as surely everyone knows by now, is a thriller that takes places over 24 hours, midnight to midnight, in 24 one-hour episodes (well, 45-minute episodes if you subtract the commercials). Everything takes place in real time, which means no flashbacks, no flash-forwards, no handy time-dissolves. Every strand of the plot has to be dovetailed and interlocked so things happen just when they should, in the right amount of time. Not that easy.

Creator Robert Cochran and his team of writers and directors have done an impressive job of putting the jigsaw together and keeping the tension ratcheted up high, as federal agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) runs around L.A. trying to stall an assassination attempt on an African American presidential candidate and rescue his wife and daughter from the clutches of the Balkan baddies. Twists, turns, revelations, and cliffhangers are tossed at us with satisfying regularity. It's not perfect: we get some hokey plot devices (instant amnesia, anybody?); the final twist makes no sense whatsoever; there are altogether too many huggy family moments; and as for Dennis Hopper's "Serbian" accent....

Even so, this is undeniably mold-breaking TV. Sutherland, rescuing his career from the doldrums in one heroic leap, fully deserves his Golden Globe. Sets and locations are artfully deployed, and Sean Callery's score is a powerful, brooding presence. Like Murder One and The Sopranos, 24 is one of those series that future TV thrillers will be measured against. --Philip Kemp

3.0 out of 5 stars You gotta start somewhere, Aug 29 2007

This review is from: 24: Season One (DVD)
In retrospect, this season of 24 is one of the weaker ones. It gets its due credit for being the first however. You can see how the show is still playing with some of the ideas that the writers had whirling around (the intro sequence even changes after a couple of episodes).

The story is a little over the top, but as later seasons of 24 prove...that's to be expected with this series. Characters come and go, there are surprise twists and turns, traitors/double agents etc. Anyone looking for a TV serial action-drama with the feel of a hollywood blockbuster should check out 24.

**If you're looking for a more realistic take on the spy/intelligence community check out the BBC series "MI-5" aka "Spooks" in the UK.**

5.0 out of 5 stars 24 hours to go..., Nov 7 2010

This review is from: 24: Season 1 (Slim Pack) (DVD)
for a long time this has been one of my favourite shows. Incredibly paced, great acting and most important, believable characters. Each season of the show is 24 episodes highlighting a continuous 24 hour span in the life of CTU (Counter Terrorist Unit) agent Jack Bauer. Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) is an emotional actor who wears his heart on his sleeve. Sure he may at times be over the top (during interrogations) but that is part of the fun in the series.

At the conclusion of each episode they usually leave you with a scenario that always makes you want to watch just one more episode...damn cliffhangers ;)

Kiefer is backed up by a great/memorable cast of characters that you'll find yourself more drawn into with each passing episode. Dennis Haysbert, Elisha Cuthbert, Carlos Bernard, Xander Berkeley to name a few. The first few seasons of 24 were something really special (before the show slowly went off rails). It easily ranks up there with Lost season 1 & 2 as some of the best hours to ever be seen on television

This show is just amazing. I started watching at the start of season 3. After about two episodes. I rushed out to buy the first season, and I wasn't disappointed. If you want to start watching 24 BUY THIS DVD FIRST. You won't regret it.
