As the action begins in New York City, Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland), now a grandfather, has retired from his gig at the Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) and plans to move to California to be with his family. Yeah, right. When he learns of a plot to assassinate President Omar Hassan (Anil Kapoor) of the mythical Islamic Republic of Kamistan--who's set to join the U.S. president, Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones), and the Russian leader at the United Nations, where they will sign a historic agreement that will end Kamistan's nuclear program and bring lasting peace to the Middle East--Jack leaps right back into the fray. Needless to say, the plot thickens faster than the pools of congealed blood he inevitably leaves in his deadly wake. Who's behind the assassination scheme? Is it Hassan's power-hungry brother, who has no desire to give up his country's nukes, or is he in cahoots with bigger, more sinister forces? Are there even CTU operatives involved in these dastardly machinations? Can Jack trust a single soul other than himself? That he will get to the bottom of all of this (or the top, as a central conspiracy reaches to the very highest government levels) is a given. That he will indulge in some questionable tactics to do so, including cynically using his allies and brutally torturing his enemies (depicted in some intense and rather graphic scenes), is also expected, especially as his relationship with a disgraced former FBI agent (Annie Wersching) ups the personal ante for him to the point of near-madness. Whether he will survive this particular day intact, however, is another matter entirely.
The makers of 24 have already shown that they're willing to go way over the top to preserve the central conceit (an entire season takes place in a single day, with each episode consuming one hour of that day), and the eighth season is no different. Plot twists that defy all credibility are not uncommon; there's no time to track down rumors or verify information, so the action tends to proceed in almost cartoon-like fashion. Many characters make cardboard look sturdy, especially the bad guys (a bunch of arrogant fools, craven traitors, and murderous louses). But that's what has made the show so addictive; it simply hurtles along, leaving no time to ask questions. And while the adventures of Jack Bauer, the ultimate one-man army, appear to be over for good, this season makes us wish that a day were just a bit longer then 24 hours. This last season of 24 is just as good as any other season. This time, the weapon that threatens America is a biological bomb. Jack comes back to CTU in the first episode, he's not forced into it but decides on his own. What was upsetting for me is his own daughter, Kim and Chloe - the 2 people that know what Jack has went throught he most, basically force him to get back into the game. He was about to move with his family (Kim, her husband and their little daughter) but now everyone is telling him to save America again. They know what he's been through but i guess for Jack this is his life and for everyone who really knows him they also know that this is what Jack was destined for.
The action is great, the twists and suprises are as good as ever. There's of course plenty of those jaw dropping moments when someone betrays someone else. Overall, this season follows the same recipe as all the other ones. It's exciting and predictable - you might end up sitting and just for fun guessing who the traitor in CTU is. The acting is superb, and the lady president does a great job at showing how smart and superior she is and how much she loves her America. Chloe as usual drives the comedy, her attitude is wonderful and her determination is even more so.
If you've been a long fan of 24 - this is of course a must see. You won't regret your money or your time, and you might even like this season more than the last few. The series 24 is a great show - it fits perfectly in the famous quote "edge of your seat" because every episode is like that. It's great for people who love suspense and twists in the story. Just when you think the bad guy is caught and nothing else exciting could happen, the producers throw you a nice wake up call and you're thrown back into the action. You never know who the good guys are and who the bad ones are. This show really creates the sense of loyalty, trust and friendship. These 3 factors are really hard to come buy for anyone in 24. Great tv-show, great actors and plots, and a great way to end it all! I look forward to re-watching some of these season again.

I was very disappointed in the lazy writing of Season 8's first 20 episodes. It was the same old thing - a dirty CTU agent, political squabbling, a bomb threat, too many villains and too little Jack - and it was dull, until the last four episodes; then Jack was, thankfully, on screen most of the time and the action was as rip-roarin,' rootin'-tootin,' and edge of your seat-intense as the best shows of the past. The excellent series finale made up for the earlier lackluster hours and the show ended with integrity and style.
While the disc, unfortunately, contains no commentaries, interviews, or bloopers (just some short, making-of videos), Season 8 is still must-see TV for fans of "24."
