2.0 out of 5 stars Scary piece of software - AI and QA deficient - Feels like Beta Version..., Dec 29 2006

No time to write a full pledge review but here quick 2 cents. I have been playing NWN for 3 years now and was expecting the NWN2 to be build on the strenght of NWN.

They did not. All new poor AI and graphics, Feels like the Fisher-Price for PC RPG. Graphics looks like 1996 games, very poor. Buggy to say the least and QA in Obsidian must be a donut shop.

Trust me = Dont buy it yet...WAIT and make sure that you read the reviews of others players that have play NWN for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not perfect, but probably the best PC RPG since Baldur's Gate 2, Dec 8 2006

First, lets get the cons out of the way. AI and Pathfinding aren't very good to put it lightly. You'll tell a companion to cast a certain spell, but as soon as you select someone else they overrule your decision and do something else. The pathfinding sometimes ignores extremely simple paths in exchange for walking around and through 5 or 6 obstacles, yet can't seem to be able to find a path around a barrel. Considering the lack of a face shape function similar to the Sims 2, the lack of decent face and hair choices is bothersome. Also, optimization is not good. The game runs rather sluggish, though recent patches have improved that quite a bit.

I've heard there are a lot of multiplayer issues, but I don't play multiplayer so that doesn't bother me.

Now for the pros. The story is one of the best since Planescape: Torment. Characters are all extremely well written and the voice acting for the main characters is excellent(though secondary characters seem to have been voiced by the cleaning staff at Atari). Graphics are top notch. While they might not be as impressive as Oblivion, NWN2 makes up for it with far superior gameplay. If you were a fan of the gameplay of NWN1, there isn't much change here except for a far superior user interface. Gone is the annoying radial menu, now we have a simple drop down context menu and the wonderful quickcast menu.

The toolset puts the NWN1 toolset to shame. The areas you're able to build are much more diverse and complex. While it does have a bit more of a learning curve, its not big enough to dissuade the casual tinkerer.

In short, if you thought NWN1 had a weak story but loved the gameplay, NWN2 is definitely for you, but if you're in it for the multiplayer, wait for a few more patches.

3.0 out of 5 stars And I Wanted to Like it So Bad!, Dec 4 2006

Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars

I was looking forward to playing this game as I had played games of this ilk before. I enjoyed the first game in the series but I never got into using the toolset from NWN 1. I looked at the toolset from this game and to me (not having any programming experience) it looks pretty complex. So I doubt I will be using it either.

As for the game itself, I find the movement of the characters finicky. Their pathing gets a little screwed up as it seems the are within a few feet of an opening and instead of continuing through taking the shortest path, they would rather run back to furthest exit, run down a hall and enter through the second entry point setting of traps and or alerting enemies. Also the camera pathing is also strange as if you scroll to first person perspective you have less view of the area (yes I know this makes sense) but when you are controlling a party of 4 characters with pathing issues, well you know you could be in for a long battle. The graphics are okay, my machine is a couple of years old but I can run the game on highest graphics settings with a "few hiccups". I choose to run it on medium settings and I don't lose too much "atmosphere".

As for the story, well it is good, the cut scenes are a little bizarre in their camera angles and the game is fairly linear but it is a good D&D story.

If you are a hard-core D&D computer rpgs player then you should pick it up, especially if you can use the toolset. If you are new to the genre then I'd wait or try another game as I think you will be disappointed...
