Review

The world of swords and sandals is pumped up to the extreme with 300, a testosterone-tinged tale that's been operatically translated from the page to the screen for the action-hungry masses by director Zack Snyder. Adapting Frank Miller's comic series must not have been easy. First and foremost, the books were pure eye candy. Printed in full horizontal splash pages brought to breathtaking life by Lynn Varley's brush strokes, each issue demanded your eye-time first, then paid it off with Miller's typical tough prose later. That same dialogue figures prominently in the film -- in fact, much of the screen and page line up wondrously, even if the film does include its share of deviations. The extra bits of action are welcomed -- armored rhinos are a nice touch, as is the giant chained Persian that's unleashed on the Spartans. However, the added subplot involving the queen has raised a few eyebrows, if only because of the questionable pro-right-wing politics it contains. Snyder himself has shrugged off much of this criticism, although even he cannot deny that this is one of the lone Hollywood products of its time to align itself to such a troubled administration. Some moviegoers might also feel a bit uninvolved in the action simply because the tale is as direct as it is. With little context for most of the characters, the whole thing runs the chance of simply being a song-and-dance number made up of quick-to-slow shots of steel, blood, and open-throated yelling. But really, there's not much wrong with that, just as long as that's something the ticket holders are craving. Stodgy critics have compared it to video-game filmmaking, but it's far better to view it as a stylish exercise in how to bring Miller's work to the big screen in a way that's never been seen before -- just as Robert Rodriguez did with Sin City. In that way, Snyder has achieved what he set out to do. Now it's time for him to apply the skills learned here on something that will ignite the same kind of fire in audiences that Leonidas instilled in his troops. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, All Movie Guide

5.0étoiles sur 5 GLORIOUS, Aoû 17 2007

It was the time of Gods and Immortals. It was the time of Kings and Warriors. It was the time of King Leonidas and his 300.

It is 480 B.C., and the Persian Army sends emissaries to Sparta to ask them to surrender peacefully to Persian rule. Insulted by the Persians contempt for the strength of the Spartan Army, the Spartan King Leonidas refuses to kneel before Xerxes - the King of Persia and self proclaimed God. King Leonidas chooses 300 Spartan Warriors to stop the entire Persian Empire from invading Greece. The Spartans assemble at the entrance to a narrow passage in an attempt to stop the Persian Army's advances. 300 Spartans stand fast, holding off hundreds of thousands of Persian Warriors known as the Immortals. Only when the Spartans are betrayed do the finally succumb to the Persian army. Word of their bravery and strength spreads throughout the Hellenic Empire and their story becomes a legend.

300 is a modern classic, a violent and beautiful tale of men who refuse to surrender to a totalitarian regime. It is a war movie with a surreal feel, it is a story that is steeped in mythos, and every chapter of this tale is lavishly brought to the screen in a movie that is as visually stunning as it is compelling.

In movies such as 300, which rely strongly on visual effects to "wow" the audience, the acting and characters usually suffer. This is not the case with 300. Gerard Butler is bold, butch and brilliant as Leonidas; Dominic West is deliciously villainous, and Lena Headey is strong, elegant and regal as Leonidas' Queen. In addition, David Wehham's narration superbly knits together epic battles, traitors and political corruption.

In short, 300 is a visually stunning classic that is filled with brains and brawn. It is a must see for anyone who likes tales filled with heroism, glory, loincloths and six packs.

4.0étoiles sur 5 Still no menu on the disc....., Sep 20 2009
Par R. De Schutter "Movie collector" (Netherlands) - Voir tous mes commentaires
(REAL NAME)
I owned the steelbook dvd of this movie and it had a killer menu. You could hear Leonidas shout 'Spartans prepare for glory!'and then a fantastic score. What a way to get into the movie feeling without even pressing the play button. So when i bought the blu ray(first release) i was dissapointed about both the dvd - bluray transfer and the lack off that fantastic menu. Then i heard about this release and thought this must be a renewed transfer with more extra's and an actual menu, but no. What a dissapointment again. I still give this release 4 start because the booklet packaging is amazing! Plus the bluray live features make up for a lot of it. Overall if your thinking of buying this release when allready owning the bluray, don't do it for the quality improvement (which is not there) or the extra features (only for players with BD live option) because you would only end up with a different keepcase.

2.0étoiles sur 5 bad transfer and other problems for me, Aoû 23 2007

Teach me to buy DVD without seeing it first. It was visually interesting, but that was spoiled my murky transfer.
I really was eager for this to come out. Yet things were so much style and no substances. Way too much slow-motion. Not enough plot. So much attention to gore in the slow effect form, but they battle seemed over in a blink. I expected something more like Helm's Deep or Braveheart, even Troy.

Just felt like why bother? Rent it first, then decide.
