My Love Hate Relationship
My older GPS being a TOM TOM, having now died on me; I purchased the Garmin 3580LMT the other day. I quickly rushed home with it, proud of my new purchase excited to take it out on the road!
I had high expectations of a newer GPS and it is what I got from Garmin. Wow what a beautiful display 800x400, loved it! The mount setup was ideal, just the way I like it. You can detach the Display Unit from the suction/power and put it away in your pocket when leaving the car for safety from theft. Yet it quickly mounts back on the suction unit when needed without having to fumble with plugging in power cables as on some units.
The Unit itself was very intuitive, the setup and firmware and new map updates on the web were a breeze. The Unit felt great in my hand and was well constructed, satellite Lock On was fast and I found the unit to be very sensitive, picking up some satellites in the house by the window.
I took the unit out for a Road Trip, the Unit performed excellent however I felt it had a few shortcomings. Maybe it is just me but I wanted more for my close to $275 I paid.
Here is what bugged me about the Unit.
When in the Navigate mode the Planned Route, which was in Pink was annoying because I had no way to get rid of the TAIL. What I wanted was to see was where I was going, not where I had been. This became particularly annoying when entering complicated intersections. Quickly looking away from the road to the GPS, all I would see was a Pink Ball of Twine looping around the intersection of where I was supposed to go and where I had been, very confusing! It took that extra second or so to figure out where I was headed which made me feel unsafe with my eyes of the road those precious seconds or so.Read more ›
