Ever since I first played Armored Core and King's Field 2, I've possessed a high degree of respect for FROM Software, for providing titles with a solid focus on gameplay at a time when cinematics were increasingly invading the wonderfully interactive world of video games. Thus, it was only fitting that I chose to inaugurate my new Playstation 3 with FROM Software's and Silicon Studios' tribute to classic console games (particularly the original Legend of Zelda): 3D Dot Game Heroes (hereafter 3DGH). Read on to evaluate the correctness of this decision.

The most noticeable feature of 3DGH is its distinctive cubic art style. All the objects, creatures and environments in the game are comprised of little blocks, representing the pixels that characterized older console games. Even better, when destroyed, they disintegrate into individual cubes - a very pleasant animation, that I never got tired of seeing. Wisely, the developers opted to depict the water bodies differently: their shimmering surfaces are of the finest sights in 3DGH. Overall, I found the look of the game quite charming indeed - and I suspect anyone who's ever played with LEGO will feel the same way.

Of course, one does not purchase this title in order to admire the visuals and take screenshots (though 3DGH does have a snapshot option). It is gameplay one seeks - and the developers delivered it in spades, and that too, from the very beginning, where one can not only select a wide variety of characters, but can even create and use one's own thanks to the title's splendid character editor. Characters are classed as heroes, royals or scholars - the class one chooses influences the game's dialogue (ex: if you're a scholar, a sage will mention your thesis on end-game grinding).

A wonderful game reminscent of good old Legend of Zelda as it used to be on the NES.

You design your own 3D hero, or download one, or use a stock hero.

The class and gender and such affect your stats, but you can choose a new hero each time you load the game so you can always try out new characters.

Alot of people upload their heroes online, so you might just find your favorite hero to downlaod if you lack the artistic skills to make one yourself. I personally downloaded the Cloud Strife from ff7 and had him duke it out 3d dot hero style.

You roam a semi open world visiting temples and towns. Each time you die, you respawn at the castle, or in a temple or in a town you slept in. You can customize your sword (longer or wider), you have a boomerang and arrow and magic and even a fairy follows you around. truely a Zelda like game.

You're also able to smack a book at a monster to trap it in the pages for later viewing.

Puzzles are also part of this game, a major part.

There is even a princess to rescue!

This is a game I'd recommend for those who enjoyed Zelda back in the day. A nice cheap game to pass the time with.

3D DOT GAME HEROES is a game that's reminisent of video games from the 80's and early 90's, back when games relied on fun and challenging gameplay. It doesn't contain 35 minute long, movie quality cutscenes, 32 player online multiplayer matches, 60 fps sense of speed, or thumb-numbingly convoluted control schemes.
What it does do is faithfully re-create/borrow/copy the gaming experience you had with games like The Legend of Zelda for NES and The Legend of Zelda, a Link to the Past for Super Nintendo.
This game pays homage to those titles, without seeming like a rip-off of them. The reason it doesn't seem like a cheap rip-off of the Zelda games is that it's been done so well.
Younger gamers probably won't take as much away from the gaming experience as anyone older who know and love games for their challenge, and don't require stunning graphics to keep their attention.
That's not to say that 3D DOT GAME HEROES isn't a good looking game. It has a very unique 3D block-y look that fits well with the type of game it is.
Definitely a must buy for old school Zelda fans.

3D Dot Game Heroes takes everything you've loved about the Zelda series and adds a great aesthetic and a few new gameplay mechanics to it.

The plot follows the tried and true dungeon-crawling, puzzle-solving, orb/gem/triforce-collecting paths that any Zelda fan would appreciate.

Not only can you create your own character from scratch (or tweak an array of available templates), but there are multiple swords you can collect, buy, and upgrade to ridiculous levels.
There are also many familiar minigames (tower defence, breakout, 'racing') that come included with the North American release of 3DDGH (this was DLC for the Japan release) to pass the time and earn money and items.
A New Game + mode is included for those who want to max out their experience.

The humour is great, as the creators were not afraid to make fun of themselves and there are many references to past and current games and pop-culture (just check out the ads for the game on Youtube).

If you liked the SNES generation of adventure games, namely Zelda, and you've had a hankering for something like that for a while, this is the game for you. I've been looking for a game like a Link to the Past since I played it again not long ago. This game came out with the perfect timing.

Be warned though, it is antiquated in ways that those same games it's based on are, so if you can't get into old school gaming, you might not be too fond of this one.
