Lenny Kravitz is still obsessed with the 1970s, and for good reason: he's found endless inspiration in the work of Sly Stone, Stevie Wonder, and a decade's worth of soul men. Kravitz hasn't lost the funk on 5, but the sound here drifts dangerously close to the Me decade's shallowest end, when disco seemed to rob R&B of its soul. So the passion Kravitz has shown on early albums is strangely diluted (aside from the album-closing epic "Can We Find a Reason?"). 5 is the singer's first foray into digital technology, but despite a few modern effects at the edges, he's doing essentially the same as before--only colder. --Steve Appleford

Lenny Kravitz est un peu le caméléon du rock : un excellent imitateur qui fait du bon boulot, avec panache et un souci obsessionnel du bel ouvrage. Comme les précédents Let Love Rule, Mamma Said, Are You Gonna Go My Way et Circus, 5 n'échappe pas à la règle. Il suffit d'abord de se pencher sur la dégaine du chanteur : les lunettes évoquent Lennon qu'il adore (il a repris "Give Peace A Chance" en début de carrière), les fringues excentriques psychées, Hendrix (Kravitz, guitariste, est très influencé par le Gaucher de Seattle), et les dreadlocks, n'importe quel rasta qui se recommande de Bob Marley. Quant aux influences du bonhomme, elles se bousculent au portillon : Led Zeppelin, les Beatles, Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield, etc. 5 dépasse pourtant cette montagne de références et propose un Kravitz nettement plus en phase avec son temps, un Kravitz lové dans des sonorités frôlant parfois l'électro. Bref, un album de soul futuriste qui mérite donc bien plus qu'un simple détour. --Hervé Comte

Lenny Kravitz isn't exactly the type of stuff the average hip hop head grows up listening to. I grew up in a neghborhood where hip hop was king. Like I said before though, good music is good music regardless of what genre you're into. This album is no different. This was the first Lenny Kravitz CD I ever listened to because my college roommate used to shower to it all the time. So it eventually grew on me. Afterward, I went out and purchased a few of his other albums (except for Mama Said, which I stole from my dad's collection....if you're reading this, I'm sorry pops....and yeah, it was me, not Chris). Anyway, Lenny is a genius in my book. This is still my favorite Kravitz album out of all the ones I heard. Lenny brings back feelings from my childhood with this CD. It's refreshing in a time where everything is starting to sound the same. If you're like I once was and you think Lenny Kravitz is on some spaced out, bud smokin', left field, white boy isht that only geeks listened to.....then you thought wrong like I did. This album helped me open up to different stuff that I wouldn't have ever given a chance before. Now I don't judge before I listen. And this album played a large role in me becoming a more well rounded listener. This album is arguably a classic. If you haven't heard it by now, give it a try.
