Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Caesar IV (CD-ROM)
I'm pretty sure the demo and the actual game require about the same amount of graphicness and it worked fine on my computer, granted I just got upgrades, but my computer is four years old. It needed them. In case you hadn't noticed, there are graphic requirements just about everywhere, you should have checked them to make sure you could use the game. Anyways, enough ranting, about the... erm, well, demo.It is very, very addictive. I love the Caesar franchise, even though I've only used the demos. You have a map. On the map you make buildings (and you don't have to wait for them to build, thankfully, cause that's just irritating) and the goal is to make a functioning, prosperous city. It's all up to you. You have to (well, you don't HAVE to, but you can, and if you do it goes to the markets, and you can trade it, and when your citizens get a hold of it then their homes upgrade-ness) mine stuff like gold, iron, timber, sand, clay, marble, and farm olives, vegetables, grapes, grain, farm (???) cattle and sheep, and more. With this you can produce weapons for your armies (which aren't available in the demo... not that I care... I like the city building aspect far more than the killing stuff aspect), clothing, olive oil, wine, etc. etc. You have trade and religion, and industry, favour witht eh current monarch, war, prosperity, protection, happiness of the people, development of the city to worry about. Basically, it's great. If you've got the money, try it.

Brain Dead Programming--Thanks for the lousy Christmas,

Fun:1.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Caesar IV (CD-ROM)
The programming and management team developing this game seem to be more interested in selling High End video cards rather than producing a game suitable for the mass computer PC market. Apparently we're all supposed to go out and buy the latest greatest video cards to run a simulation game. Not! For whatever reasons, after having to go downward in the opening menu and add new direct draw and My SQL, etc. features I finally after 45 minutes got the basic game to load in three trys. When it finally tried to run... the video is just a white screen. So as computer engineer who loved Caesar III (See my review here some years back), I have nothing but contempt for the idiots that can't even get their own boot loading to know that certain provided software is needed before loading the game proper. Then there is the little gotchya of my 64 Meg video card isn't new enough, and it's likely yours won't be either. Well, this one goes back with me holding me nose and I'll not be buying another Sierra (or developers Tilted Mill) product if they can't see the sense of making a product compatible with as many computers as possible rather than unwisely pushing the cutting edge in video simply to tick people off and alienate them because they push the technology envelope in an application which is hardly and should hardly be demanding.

Caesar IV,
Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Caesar IV (CD-ROM)
I've played the game many times and am frustrated every time I play it. As you build your city, buildings are burning up all over the place. The game doesn't give you enough time to build an infrastructure before the armies of Rome are coming to depose you. When you click on an item, it sometimes takes several clicks before the game responds. How frustrating! The visuals are good, but I just find it very frustrating. Give me something that doesn't create as much stress.
