Product Description

Album Description

Since they formed in 1993, Finnish orchestral rock band Apocalyptica has released six studio albums featuring numerous cello-based instrumentals along with some vocal-based songs. Whatever styles they’ve explored – from atmospheric interludes to fast, battering rhythms -- their music has been gripping, dynamic and full of melody. But with their seventh album, 7th Symphony the band has composed an album that not just symphonic sounding; it’s practically a symphony.

7th Symphony is the musical culmination of 17 years of hard work. Apocalyptica started in 1993 as an outlet for Toppinen and three of his classically trained classmates at the prestigious Sibelius Academy. Three years later, they released their debut, Apocalyptica Plays Metallica by Four Cellos.

In addition to the six symphonic tracks, 7th Symphony features four songs with vocals that were co-written with other established artists. The first single, “End of Me” was co-written with Johnny Andrews and Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale, who sings on the tune. “It’s definitely a cool rock song,” Toppinen says. “Gavin definitely had his own ideas and wanted to change some of the music and lyrics, but working with him was pretty easy. He’s a nice guy and he’s very professional.”

The other guest vocal performances are equally impressive. Brent Smith from Shinedown sings on “Not Strong Enough,” which was written by award-winning pop songstress Diane Warren (Aerosmith, Toni Braxton, LeAnn Rimes, Trisha Yearwood) and produced by Howard Benson (My Chemical Romance, Papa Roach). Benson also worked with Lacey from Flyleaf on the song “Broken Pieces.”

With a summer tour planned for the U.S. and Europe, the stage is set for 7th Symphony, Apocalyptica’s most eclectic and inspired album to date, one that places equal emphasis on beautiful melodies and heavy, bombastic rhythms.

Album Description

Deluxe CD/DVD edition includes additional tracks plus a bonus DVD. 2010 release, the seventh album from the Finnish Cello Metal band. Released three years after their previous album Worlds Collide, Apocalyptica has stayed with the tradition of having four tracks with featured vocalists, the remaining tracks are all instrumental. Dave Lombardo of Slayer is featured on drums, on the track entitled "2010". The first single, "End of Me", features Gavin Rossdale of Bush on vocals.

Wow & yes I could keep repeating that word. I have to say this CD is amazing. I absolutely love the genius idea to combine Apocalyptica's unbelievable classical instrumental talent with artists from other genres to make such a great CD!

First off Apocalyptica's individual talents for each instrument that they play goes without saying is worth it. Some of the more memorable songs which are them exclusively on this CD is Sacra which has some of the more intricate sting arrangements & is wonderful; it is a wonderful classical piece.

The Shadow of Venus starts out with what you think is going to be a traditional classical piece but then develops into a combination of rock & traditional classical instrumental work that builds over the course of the song; it plays like a mystery evolving into a climax of instrumentation brillance.

On the Rooftop with Quasi Modo is great...cool string work in the beginning & throughout along with some cool beats added to it; then a piercing violin part which is mezmerizing; then it switches to some parts with classical rock segments that are dark; constant ebbs & flows changing throughout to then just more beautiful traditional classical portions that are hauntingly beautifual arrangements.

The song "Beautiful" is just that. It is a traditional classical piece that is so soothing to listen to I just want to put it on repeat & fall asleep to it.

Then there are a few songs which are collaborations with other artists & Apocalyptica that are also brilliant. My favorite song is with the singer Brent Smith called "Not Strong Enough"....OMG I can't say enough about this song; from the fabulous vocal ability of Brent Smith. I had not heard of him before this CD & now I want to buy other music of his with the band Shinedown. His voice is obviously rock but he could easily crossover to do country as well as his voice is that good. The accompaniment of Apocalyptica on this song sounds fabulous.

The song "Broken Pieces" featuring Lacey is a very written song & great delivery vocally as well.

Oddly enough I thought my favorite song on this CD would be "End Of Me" with Gavin Rossdale which I do love. He has an intensity that is obvious; reminds me back in the day of Grunge as their were so many great bands (his included) that came out of that era of music. This song is driven and full of emotion about the end of a relationship or the desire for it to just be over.

Anyone who says that classical music has no place in music anymore needs to pick up a CD of Apocalyptica as they not only give classical instrumentational music relevence in today's market but I think that Classical musicians should be doing collabarations with other genres more often as the combination is fantastic. Pick it up & check it out...especially if your looking for something new, original & artistically creative!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent album, Sep 3 2010

This review is from: 7th Symphony (Dlx Ed) (W/Dvd) (Audio CD)
In recent years, I've been having a difficult time finding music I enjoy. Suddenly, I discovered bands, like Riverside, Evergrey, and others, that are from overseas. Apocalyptica is one of these bands. Their true passion for music comes through, even in the made-for-radio songs.
That said, this album (though not my favorite of theirs) is outstanding. My favorites tracks include Through Paris in a Sports car and 2010. I generally enjoy their instrumentals the most, and they do not disappoint. '
Overall, if you are a fan of progressive metal/rock, or simply enjoy beautiful, deep music---this is for you. If you think more along popular culture's terms---maybe you should skip it.

After hearing/watching the End of Me video on their official web site, I knew this would be the album that the masses would finally recognize, and it DOES deliver. ( And I KNEW I had to have it ! )
If you aren't into the "symphonic metal" sound, (think Kamelot) this is not the album for you. Just download the songs with guest singers, and be done with it.
A true musician is not "locked" into just one style/genre. You have to be well rounded to appreciate all that there is out there.

This album truly shows where these talented musicians came from (their classical roots), and brings us an album that is well rounded........ heavy, but also throws in a few more "classical" sounding pieces.

I am truly looking forward to where these guys are headed & I am along for the ride !

5.0 out of 5 stars there needs to be more music like this, Oct 23 2011

Genres: cello metal, instrumental metal, symphonic metal, neo-classical metal, post grunge (three songs), hard rock, death metal (one song)

Apocalpytica is extremely unique and a must listen for all metal fans. I own this and Worlds Collide, so I haven't been listening to Apocalpytica for very long. I'm really confused why other bands don't incorporate cellos. It's a naturally heavy instrument.

7th Symphony has an excellent blend of songs. There's some really heavy tracks, some lighter ones, some epic productions, and some ballads.

Songs:
At the Gate of Manala: A completely epic opening. I listen to this song to get me in the mood to do epic things, except I don't really do anything epic.

End of Me: It's a decent song featuring Rossdale of Bush. I don't listen to Bush, but I like Apocalyptica's guest vocal songs to break up the instrumentals.

Not Strong Enough: This song just ruins so much for me. I cannot stand Shinedown nor Smith's wanna be grunge voice that's been in style since Creed. Plus, the music is structured like a generic contemporary rock song. As it turns out, this song wasn't written by the band, so I'm glad they're not completely responsible for this blemish. I know many people like Shinedown, but they make me want to vomit.

2010: A standard Apocalypitca song.

Through Paris in a Sportscar: This is one of the more unique tracks, but it's only available on the special edition.

Beautiful: A slow, relaxing break.

Broken Pieces: I'm glad there's a female guest vocal, although lyrically this seems really similar to Scabbia's appearance on World's Collide.

On the Rooftop with Quasimodo: An interesting instrumental. Yeah, it's a generic comment, but that's all I have to say about it.

Bring Them to Light: An extremely heavy song with death metal vocals. I'm sure it's not for everyone, but I'm glad to see Apocalytpica make one.

Sacra: A slower song that helps set up the finale.

Rage of Poseidon: The mirror to the opening track; this song is even more epic.

Shadow of Venus: Normally, putting a bonus track after a song designed to be the end messes the album's conclusion up. But this song follows Poseidon very well. I'm not sure why it ends with several minutes of silence. I never understood songs that do that.

Every heavy metal fan should at least try out Apocalyptica and this is an excellent album to start with. Hard rock people and appreciators of technical music should also try this out. Considering that 3/4 of the guest singers are from hard rock bands, it appears Apocalyptica is trying to expand their audience.

I think 7th Symphony exceeded Worlds Collide, and I'm hoping their next album raises the bar even higher.
