How Eminem was able to assemble so many credible emcees of today and yesteryear (Jay-Z, Rakim) to endorse his Holly'hood coming out party is anyone's guess. What is clear, however, is that (dare we say it) the Shady One might be growing up. On "Lose Yourself" Em abandons his callous, hardcore posturing to write thoughtful hood-centric coming-of-age lyrics that would make Melle Mel proud. On "Battle," Gang Starr's Guru tears through a sick beat from rap's most prolific producer, DJ Premier. Sadly, Nas wastes more valuable studio time dissing Jay-Z (ho hum) on "You Wanna Be Me." Interestingly, once you get past the living-legend love-in and peep the skills from Em's lesser-known Shady Records roster of underground wordsmiths, such as 50 Cent ("Wanksta") or Obie Trice ("Adrenaline Rush"), you might urge Em to consider giving up his thespian pursuits to become a full-time record executive. Not even the baffling inclusion of Macy Gray's humdrum "Time of Your Life" can sink this project. --Dalton Higgins

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Mix of Rap April 26 2004
Format:Audio CD
This is one of my my favorite Hip-Hop album ever. It has a great mix of excellent Mcs, and great production. It has a few songs that are EXTREMELY GOOD. Its rare to find an album with this many songs that good. However, it does have some weak songs, but they dont take it down too much to the point it isnt worth buying. This album is 5+ stars. One thing its missing is Dr Dre, if he was on it (instead of Macy Gray or Boomkat) it may have pushed it over the top as the best ever.
Songs:
1. Lose Yourself (Eminem) 4.5/5 Great Song, but overplayed
2. Love Me (Eminem-ObieTrice-50Cent) 4/5 Em, Obie & 50 on one track is good mix
3. 8 Mile (Eminem) 3/5 Good Song, but too long
4. Adrenaline Rush 5/5 BEST SONG, great beat by Dr Dre
5. Places to Go (50 Cent) 4/5
6. Rap Game (D-12) 5/5 Another GREAT song. Better than anything on Devils Night or D-12 World
7. 8 Mile & Running (Jay-Z & Freeway) 3/5
8. Spitshine (Xzibit) 5/5 Another one of my All-Time Favs
9. Time of My Life (Macy Gray) 1/5 SUX. This spot wouldve been perfect for a Dr Dre song, but NOOOO! they waste it on Macy
10. U Wanna Be Me (Nas) 5/5 Tight song. Nas rips it up.
11. Wanksta (50 Cent) 4/5 Catchy beat, good lyrics.
12. Wasting My Time (Boomkat) 1/5 Another weak point
13. RAKIM (Rakim) 2/5 Not too great
14. Thats My N***a fo Real (Young Zee) 3/5
15. Battle (Gangstarr) 3/5
16. Rabbit Run (Eminem) 5/5 No hook, just blazing hot Em rap tearin it up
DELUXE EDITION (Disc 2) ALSO INCLUDES:
1. Rap Name (Obie Trice) 5/5 Obie's First Single
2. Stimulate (Eminem) 3/5
3. Till I Collapse Freestyle (50 Cent) 5/5 {Green Lantern}
4. Gangsta (Joe Beast) 4/5
5. Weekend (Brooklyn) 1/5
6. California (Shuanta) 1/5

5.0 out of 5 stars You only get one shot .... April 17 2004
Format:Audio CD
Loved 8 mile and feel the same about the soundtrack. Features new songs from some of the best rappers out today (Nas and Rakim for example) and even allows Em to showcase the great Shady Records talent. The song are all relevant to the film in one way or another and they all grow on you. Although I was dissapointed to not be able to recognise hardly any songs from the film (as you'll find the songs like 'shook ones part 2' and 'feel my flow' on the cd entitled "more music from 8mile", but each song is great and adds to the message and emotion Eminem wanted to hand across in 8mile.
Surprising how no one seems to like Boomkats 'wasting my time' as although I hadn't heard of the artist and hearing the slow beat immediatly put me off. This is a classic example of 'dont read a book by its cover' as its without a doubt one of the best tracks on the album purely for the lyrics and one I think you should check out. Being a Shady Records fan I loved the songs produced and rapped by them (including 'love me' and '8 mile') and by ending with 'Rabitt run' ends it all off explosively and I think its a great companion to the film, and great even if you dont like the flim as you'll still find some great rap songs to listen to.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average Soundtrack April 4 2004
By ShiZniT
Format:Audio CD
This the soundtrack to Eminem's film "8 Mile" starring Eminem, Mekhi P, Kim Basinger, Brittany Murphy. That movie is somewhat good; it's about the life of Jimmy Smith (Em's character), who is a struggling white rapper very similar to Eminem in real life in his early days before Dr. Dre discovered him. (FYI - A then unknown Eminem was doing a freestyle on a local radio station when Dr. Dre heard him. Dre was very impressed with what he heard that he put out a manhunt who that rapper was. The rest was history). Eminem is a good actor, he has the potential unlike Ja Rule, who is very OA in "Half Past Dead". (...) There are so many good rapper-actors out there like Dr. Dre, Snoop, Ice Cube, DMX, Kurupt (he was very funny on "Hollywood Homicide" & "Half Past Dead"), LL Cool J, Treach etc. But my favorite of em' all has gotta be 2Pac, of course, he just got the talent and the potential to be a great actor (Just watch "Juice" - a critically acclaimed film starring 2Pac. This got to be 'Pac's best acting). Anyway going back to the album, here is the breakdown of all the songs.
1. Lose Yourself - (5 stars) Everybody already heard this one.
2. Love Me - (4.5 stars) I actually liked this song. 50 surprisingly delivers a decent verse cracking jokes on Lil' Kim, D'Angelo, Lauryn Hill etc. Obie and Eminem deliver good verse. The hook is great on the chorus.
3. 8 Mile - (3.5 stars) The title track. I liked this one at first but this gets boring as time goes on. Another one of those Em' tracks that gets old fast.
4. Adrenaline Rush - (3.5 stars) by Obie Trice. Kind of a decent track from Obie. I don't know how many times he said the word "muthaf*cka" here.
5. Places To Go - (1 star) Another one of those wack 50 tracks. Do I need to say more?
6. Rap Game - (4 stars) by D12.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lose Yourself March 16 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is a pretty good soundtrack. Eminem is really good, but there are more nice suprises in this CD. Rating (out of 5):
Eminem ~ Lose Yourself - 4/5 - Great song! Wish it hadn't been so overplayed though.
Eminem, Obie Trice & 50 Cent ~ Love Me - 5/5 - This song is awesome! Obie starts it off with a BANG and Eminem rocks it in the second verse. 50 could be just a little better on this track, but oh well. The sampled chorus fits in well too.
Eminem ~ 8 Mile - 4/5 - This one's pretty good. I didn't like it as much at first, but I've gotten used to it. His rhymes are awesome on this one, too.
Obie Trice ~ Adrenaline Rush - 4/5 - A pretty good track from Obie. The beat ROCKS, and his vocal is nice and strong. Get his album, "Cheers", if you haven't already. It's awesome!
50 Cent ~ Places to Go - 4/5 - I don't listen to it much, but when I do, I like it.
D12 featuring 50 Cent ~ Rap Game - 4/5 - A great track from Em's group, D12. Goes for a while, but good track if you have time.
Jay-Z featuring Freeway ~ 8 Miles and Runnin' - 3/5 - This track's ok. Not the best of Jay-Z, though.
Xzibit ~ Spit Shine - 4/5 - This one's quite good, actually. The beat rocks, and it fits in well with X's voice. Good works.
Macy Gray ~ Time of My Life - 2/5 - This just does not fit in with the rest of the soundtrack. If you're in a good mood and want to listen to something other than rap though, this may be okay.
Nas ~ U Wanna Be Me - 4/5 - A great track from Nas. One thing though - why did Eminem stick both Jay-Z and Nas on the same CD? This is a Jay-Z dis, after all.
50 Cent ~ Wanksta - 4/5 - A pretty cool number from 50. It's a Ja Rule dis that also appears as a bonus cut on 50's "Get Rich or Die Tryin'" CD.
