5.0 out of 5 stars We all saw it coming...sort of., April 7 2004
By R O C K E T (The Twin Cities, MN) - See all my reviews
I'm sure most fans of Apoptygma Berzerk have noticed the not-so-subtle shift toward a lighter synthpoppier sound. After hearing "Something I Should Know" from APB's last album, Harmonizer, some people were probably pretty scared that APB as we knew it would soon be all but gone. Fortunately for those people, Stephan Groth did decide to go that way, but under a different name. And fortunately for me, "Something I Should Know" was one of my faves from Harmonizer and was hoping for more of that sound...yet I wanted APB to remain what it was for the most part. So therefore, fans and non-fans of "Something I Should Know" both lucked out. 808 Bit is a fun album. I won't go so far as to say it's genious, but it's great for what it is. It will totally take you back to the '80s with it's blippy synths and moderate beats. This is not boring, typical "electroclash" like the much-overrated Ladytron. The vocals are varied - you don't get the same vacant monotone vocals that many of these bands give you. Highlights are "Before You Came Along," "Falling Out," "Invade My Heart Tonight," and "Bedsitter." If you liked APB's "Something I Should Know," most likely you will love 808 Bit. If you like the, ahem, electroclash genre, you will most likely like this album, too. This is currently my second favorite of the genre (following Soviet's "We Are Eyes, We Are Builders").

5.0 out of 5 stars :), April 5 2004
By A Customer
808 Bit was originally supposed to come out March 2003. Then it got pushed back to April. I pre-ordered it April 4th, 2003. Today is April 6th, 2005 and after waiting for literally a year...all I have to say is...it was well worth the wait.

If Stephan would have kept evolving his music as he did, I wouldn't be surprised if this was the sound the 5th Apoptygma Berzerk CD would be like. (Although, since he did this kind of music as a different project I am very curious about the sound of the next Apop release.)

Basically, 808 Bit is electroclash done right. It sounds very 80s and very new at the same time. The beats are amazing. They'll seriously blow you away.

Lyrically... Well, there isn't very much here. This is more of a fun CD so, most songs just repeat the same stanza several times throughout the song. This CD won't move you emotionally like other Apop releases have in the past. Well..perhaps Invade My Heart and Big City Girl so a little bit. There's a little emotional appeal but, just plan on dancing to it.

There's a wonderful cover of Soft Cell's Bedsitter on here. I'm a big Soft Cell fan so, I was really excited about this track. VERY COOL!

My only complaint is that the tracklist isn't actually correct and I got kinda confused. As it turns out 6 is actually New Age and 7 is Bedsitter. Of course I'm happy they released it and didn't push the release date back again.

Overall, if the you like electronic music of any genre, GET THIS CD! You won't regret it. Stephan Groth is God...
