Mar 28 2002 Brief Histories
This introduction to the years of the Napoleonic wars (1793 to 1815) tells the story of one of the keys to that great conflict, the Ship of the Line - the deadly battleships that played such a vital role in the battles. Product Description

Review

"- 'this is an excellent book... action packed with many of the great sea battles that form such an important part of the nation's history - especially of course Trafalgar... Above all it is clearly and simply written and most readers, whether technically minded or not should have little difficulty in following the story of the main battles' - The Nautical Magazine - 'possibly the most useful new book to introduce the reader to the concept of Napoleonic Naval history' - First Empire

4.0 out of 5 stars A first rate introduction April 7 2011
By A. J. Bond - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a book that does pretty much what it says on the cover. The ships are mentioned, sometimes in surprising detail and with the emphasis on first to third rates, along with the seamen's life and living conditions of the period. Major sea battles of the Revolutionary, and Napoleonic wars are also outlined, and comments made on the state of the relevant forces, and contemporary political views. In effect it is a potted history, but excellent as an introduction to the period or for background reference when starting with historical naval fiction.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Brief History May 18 2006
By Clive Fouche - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is short sharp and to the point and yet has a suprising amount of detail. For someone wanting an introduction to this subject this is definatly the book to have as it is easy to read and understand and covers the most exciting period in the age of the sailing navy. A good background book for Jack Aubry, Hornblower and Richard Bolitho readers.
