Interesting premise but story lacks attention to detail and cohesion,

I have always enjoyed Shreve''s work, even her less popular titles, but found this a mere passable read, really a 2.5 rating. The flaws could have easily been fixed by a writer of her calibre if her editor did his/her job (I've been finding this issue common in many authors' work, of late). I thought the heroine''s behaviour didn''t ring true for much of the story so she ended up being unremarkable and inconstant. The minor characters were far better drawn. The accident on Mt. Kenya, the cornerstone of the story, wasn''t described very well so I read and reread the passages trying to get a clearer picture of how it occurred. Finally, I went online to research the challenges of climbing Mt. Kenya. The aftermath of the accident was briefly melodramatic but then didn''t really go anywhere consequential. The heroine's marriage was completely lifeless and flat so I didn't care if it survived (and, ultimately, this is what the novel is about). Finally, I found too many unfamiliar African terms used in ways that forced me to look them up while in the middle of a chapter--not acceptable reading for entertainment purposes.

I agree completely with the previous review. I normally LOVE Anita Shreve and when I saw this one, I was excited to finish the book I was on so that I could start this one. It was a real disappointment. The incident at the climb happened and then the book drifted off in other directions and seemed to just ramble for a while until the story returned to Mt. Kenya. You never really get to know Patrick, the husband, and it's true that you don't get a feel for the marriage or the relationship at all. I felt that sometimes the writing almost seemed amateurish (pretty much every character is described in terms of how "weathered" they looked. What's up with that??) and didn't seem worthy of Anita Shreve's typical ability to describe situations and feelings so that you are drawn in. I'm glad it wasn't the first Shreve book I've written or I might not read another.

I did not even finish this incredibly badly written book. I was looking forward to reading it as normally I enjoy reading the writer's books.I agree with the other two posters.
