Review

PRAISE FOR A CHANGE IN ALTITUDE:

"Visual and sharply focused....Shreve knows how to keep a reader engaged." (Washington Post Valerie Sayers )

"No one is better at gently, but thoroughly probing the interior life of her characters than Anita Shreve....A Change in Altitude reflects many of Shreve's familiar themes: loss and grief, the relationship between a man and woman, and how one moment can change a life forever. Shreve weaves a strong mix of exotic Africa and interesting characters, producing a potent story that will keep readers thinking about them long after the last page of the novel." (Newsday Mary Foster )

"Shreve takes readers from Nairobi's lush suburbs to its fetid slums, from the drawing-room world of the white gentry to that of its black servants....A Change in Altitude rises a few thousand feet above typical women's fiction." (USA Today Olivia Barker )

"Prepare to cancel all your appointments as you race through this dramatic saga....Enthralling. The mountains Margaret must climb-literally, and figuratively-are difficult ones. Readers will be eager to learn if she successfully scales the peak." (Bookpage Eliza Borné )

"A winner. Once again, Shreve's fans can approach her book with the confident anticipation that she will provide yet another satisfying experience. A Change in Altitude is an unusual kind of page-turner, part whodunit, part adventure story....Readers will vicariously enjoy all facets of this  adventure in Africa from the safety of their own armchair." (Free-Lance Star Diane Makovsky )

Product Description

Margaret and Patrick have been married just a few months when they set off on what they hope will be a great adventure-a year living in Kenya. Margaret quickly realizes there is a great deal she doesn't know about the complex mores of her new home, and about her own husband.

A British couple invites the newlyweds to join on a climbing expedition to Mount Kenya, and they eagerly agree. But during their harrowing ascent, a horrific accident occurs. In the aftermath of the tragedy, Margaret struggles to understand what happened on the mountain and how these events have transformed her and her marriage, perhaps forever.

A Change in Altitude illuminates the inner landscape of a couple, the irrevocable impact of tragedy, and the elusive nature of forgiveness. With stunning language and striking emotional intensity, Anita Shreve transports us to the exotic panoramas of Africa and into the core of our most intimate relationships.

3.0 out of 5 stars Interesting premise but story lacks attention to detail and cohesion, May 22 2010

This review is from: A Change in Altitude: A Novel (Paperback)
I have always enjoyed Shreve''s work, even her less popular titles, but found this a mere passable read, really a 2.5 rating. The flaws could have easily been fixed by a writer of her calibre if her editor did his/her job (I've been finding this issue common in many authors' work, of late). I thought the heroine''s behaviour didn''t ring true for much of the story so she ended up being unremarkable and inconstant. The minor characters were far better drawn. The accident on Mt. Kenya, the cornerstone of the story, wasn''t described very well so I read and reread the passages trying to get a clearer picture of how it occurred. Finally, I went online to research the challenges of climbing Mt. Kenya. The aftermath of the accident was briefly melodramatic but then didn''t really go anywhere consequential. The heroine's marriage was completely lifeless and flat so I didn't care if it survived (and, ultimately, this is what the novel is about). Finally, I found too many unfamiliar African terms used in ways that forced me to look them up while in the middle of a chapter--not acceptable reading for entertainment purposes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Average at best, Jun 5 2010

I agree completely with the previous review. I normally LOVE Anita Shreve and when I saw this one, I was excited to finish the book I was on so that I could start this one. It was a real disappointment. The incident at the climb happened and then the book drifted off in other directions and seemed to just ramble for a while until the story returned to Mt. Kenya. You never really get to know Patrick, the husband, and it's true that you don't get a feel for the marriage or the relationship at all. I felt that sometimes the writing almost seemed amateurish (pretty much every character is described in terms of how "weathered" they looked. What's up with that??) and didn't seem worthy of Anita Shreve's typical ability to describe situations and feelings so that you are drawn in. I'm glad it wasn't the first Shreve book I've written or I might not read another.

I did not even finish this incredibly badly written book. I was looking forward to reading it as normally I enjoy reading the writer's books.
I agree with the other two posters.
