4.0 out of 5 stars Nice poems, with beautiful illustrations Dec 19 2011
Format:Hardcover
(This review was originally published here: [...])

A Full Moon is Rising is a delightul children's book about how people around the world celebrate the full moon. Each page contains a poem set in a different place, along with a beautiful illustration.

At the back of the book, there are a few pages of explanations of the poems, which help to put them into context. The one complaint I have is that I got so much more out of the poems when I went back and read them again having read the explanations, so I wish they weren't at the back. Although, I guess a little kid might not want their poems and pictures interrupted by explanations, so maybe I'm looking at it from too adult a perspective.

My favourite poem in the book is probably Wolf Moon, the setting of which is Algonquin Park, Canada (I'm a sucker for things set in Canada). In it, children are sitting around a campfire under a full moon, warning each other about werewolves. Meanwhile, the wolves out in the wilderness are warning each other about humans.

Overall, I think this would be a great book to read to your kids. It's always nice to find kids' books that include cultural and religious diversity. More this, please, kids' book publishers!

4.0 out of 5 stars Engagine Poetry Book Nov 23 2011
By Coreena TOP 500 REVIEWER

I read this book with my six year old daughter the other day and we both really enjoyed it. Each page presents wonderful pictures and a poem from a different part of the world and how they look at the moon there. I liked how there was a map at the beginning showing each place that was mentioned in the book.

First off, the pictures and the art are beautiful, simple and engaging. I am sure that kids will love the bold colours and scenes from around the world. Some things will be foreign and some familiar, which is a really nice mix.

We also loved the poems. They were short and easy to read and also gave us a taste of the different cultures. I think even younger kids would enjoy these, and you certainly don't have to read them all in one sitting - there is a kind of overall story about the moon, but each poem can also be enjoyed on its own.

When we were done, I asked my daughter what she if she like the book. She said 'yes.' Then I asked her what she liked, the story? The art? She said 'both, I like all of it.' Short and to the point, that sums it all up!

5.0 out of 5 stars Take a trip around the world! Feb 8 2012

As a fan of Marily Singer, especially MIRROR MIRROR : A BOOK OF REVERSIBLE VERSE I am not surprised to find that I loved A FULL MOON IS RISING. So much so that not only did I read the book a few times I also listened to Marilyn Singer read her poems aloud. What a treat. The illustrations by Julie Cairns are bright and colorful and meld well with the poetry. After finishing the book I felt like I had traveled the world. Recommended for libraries needing to spruce up their poetry sections and for readers interested in the moon and/or for multil-cultural collections. A gem of a book.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Magic of the Full Moon Jan 23 2012
By LadyInRead - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Beautiful paintings and poems illustrate how the same wonderful moon is viewed across the world by children as they lead their daily lives. We are taken on a colorful journey woven in short flowing poems as children from Australia, China, India, Israel, the U.S., Colombia, Mali, Mexico, Canada, Turkey, South Africa.
I loved all the poems and the bright, detailed, descriptive watercolors accompanying them but my favorite lines are from one poem set in Cape Town, South Africa
"Such smart children." Mama laughs.
"Bright as the moon!"
My daughter loved that children all across the world see the same moon she is seeing here in the US (specifically that her cousin in India - my niece). Her favorite poem was the one set in Australia - a beautiful painting accompanying it too
"Its glow builds a magic staircase from the mudflats to the sky."

The end pages of the book are not to be skipped as they contain a brief overview of the phases of the moon (Gibbous is my favorite word there) and a brief description of the festivities mentioned in the poems.
3.0 out of 5 stars How do you see the moon?? Nov 28 2011

I liked this story for the fact that it shows children that the moon is the same moon for everyone. It maybe in a different phase of it's cycle yet it is still the same. It has great explainations along with the story. The artwork is unique in that it's simple yet colorful and inviting. It was interesting to know how other cultures respond to the moon.
