Book Description

A Gift of Ice continues the fantastic journey for truth that began with A Door in the Woods and will become a four-volume series.

The series has been enjoyed by readers of all ages, but it has particularly been a big hit with teenage readers. Book 2 of the Jimmy Fincher Saga Jimmy Fincher cannot be destroyed. In an impossible place under A Door in the Woods, Jimmy received the first of The Four Gifts—contributions of a mysterious and desperate people trying to save the world from an enemy unprecedented in ruthlessness. Not much is known about this enemy, or what their purposes may be. But a haunting phrase has been spoken as a warning. The Stompers are coming. Having temporarily sealed the entrance to the Black Curtain—that strange portal from whence the Stompers will come—Jimmy has fled to Japan with his family in search of The Second Gift, with only scant clues as their guide. Peril will be inescapable, mysteries will abound. Nothing can be assumed, and help will be found in the least likely of places. The weight of the world will fall upon Jimmy. He is not a wizard.

He is not a mutant.

He is not a genius.

He is far more powerful.

He is Jimmy Fincher.

First Sentence
The seventh day had been a really fun one, mostly spent walking up and down the beach, buying food from vendors while taking in the salty scent of the ocean, and talking about the good old days before we all discovered Raspy and Shadow Ka and little things like the fact that other worlds existed through black rips in the air called the Black Curtain. Read the first page

4.0 out of 5 stars A Gift of Ice ............. Molly's Reviews, Jun 6 2004

This review is from: A Gift of Ice (Paperback)
Title: . Jimmy Fincher Safa A Gift of Ice
Interesting read ......... Recommended ........... 4 stars

The Review
Fourteen year old Jimmy Fincher and his family have been staying in Japan for a week. Jimmy discovered a conspiracy of strange men trying to open a magical door later the gift of a shield in book one have made Jimmy indestructible. The disappearance of Jimmy's friend Joseph, kidnapped by winged shadows, have left him sad. The Givers, a peculiar group dedicated to helping save the world offer some hope. Jimmy and his family have spent seven quiet days in Japan when the night silence is broken by the roar of motorcycles. Enter Kenji who announces that the Bosu Zoku have come to end Jimmy's quest against the Stompers. Jimmy discovers a little black stick belonging to Kenji is more than it might first appear. The Ka are a group sent to prepare the way for the Stompers who will come and wreak awful havoc on the earth. Jimmy's dad dreams peculiar dreams, the Geezer from Oklahoma, Joseph is returned and Jimmy has a run in with a giant money before the story ends. He receives his second gift Ice and uses his new treasure to save his family when they are abandoned on board a flying helicopter. Jimmy as the leader of the Alliance is gaining in power when Joseph announces they need to locate a ship, fast. They must get to the bottom of the sea before the Tower of Three Days collapses. The Stompers are coming and Jimmy must yet receive two more gifts.

The notion that the fate of the entire world rests on the shoulders of one youngster may seem ludicrous however I have never known a child who does not think himself invincible, nor one who does not want to be a hero to his family.

Kids will enjoy the fast paced romp beginning with Jimmy telling of the seventh day his family has spent in Japan and ending with Jimmy's desire to be given his third gift. Jimmy Fincher Safa A Gift of Ice show cases writer Dashner's fertile imagination in a well crafted tale of astonishing escapades and exceptional, well fleshed characters. This is a book sure to please youngsters in the target audience and will be a good addition to school, home and personal libraries.

Book 3 Tower of Air is next in the series.

Enjoyed the read, happy to recommend.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book!, Mar 9 2004
This review is from: A Gift of Ice (Paperback)
James Dashner has done it again, only this time he did it even better. A Gift of Ice picks up where A Door in the Woods left off, with the Fincher family on their way to Japan to track down the mysterious book of the Givers and obtain the second gift. On their way, they pick up some new enemies, some whacked out motorcyclists who are bent on keeping Jimmy away from his goal. All along the ride, we are treated to the unique James Dashner voice and the Jimmy Fincher way of looking at the world. I enjoyed A Gift of Ice even more than I did A Door in the Woods, and that's saying a lot. I can't wait for the third installment. Type fast, James!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Excellence Continues, Jan 5 2005
By Dan Willis "Author" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: A Gift of Ice (Paperback)
With "A Gift of Ice", James Dashner continues his excellent tale of ominous destiny and bizarre magic. More troubles await young (and semi-invincible) Jimmy Fincher in the land of Japan as he searches for the second of the four gifts he needs to save his family and all of humanity.

A great read that will be fun for kids and the adults that may end up reading it to them.
