Out of date, but still is correct Dec 25 2011

A Girl Like Me, written by Jeanette Eyerling, was written during a time when only "bad" girls became pregnant. It shows that pregnancy can happen to any girl, at any time. It can even happen to girls who are careful about whom they date. The book does encourage girls to leave home and go to a type of "safe house", a girl's home, to have the baby. It also encourages girls to give the babies up for adoption. In this manner, the girl can go back to school or to college and give the baby a much better choice in life...a chance to have two parents who actually want and can't have a child. These parents will make sure the child isn't brought up on welfare and will have a stable family life. The girl can then go on and try to have a better life. It was written in a time where the girl's only real option is to marry the boy who got her pregnant, or have the baby and give it up. Most girls did not keep their babies. It is probably not a book that any teenage girl in 2011 would want to read. She would not find it believable. However, for me, a teen in the 1970's, it was very believable.
