Product Description

From Amazon.com

With beats that mix hip-hop, R&B, and UK garage, A Grand Don't Come For Free, like its impressive predecessor Original Pirate Material (2002), transforms the everyday and the mundane into the terms of an epic. British rapper Mike Skinner captures the simple details of a simple existence that inhabits the lower levels of the middle class. But whereas Original Pirate Material was more about everyday life on the streets, this follow-up is more about everyday life in the flat--mom's kitchen, my mate's living room, my girl's couch. The Streets has fallen in love, and his raps narrate the adventures and misadventures of this romance. In all, it is a concept album that places greater emphasis on storytelling rather than on the music, which is often spare with little or no enhancements. With some songs expressing the beauty of love and others expressing the pleasures of drugs, the Streets is still holding it down for the UK. --Charles Mudede

clever. not brilliant, but ... fun, and often amusing July 14 2004

must admit, i was very troubled through the first few tracks. thought i had just wasted money on a new disc. by the fourth track, though, i had been completely sucked in. the funny, witty, clever lyrics of OPM were back. by "Get Out of My House," i was laughing out loud and thoroughly enjoying myself.

i completely agree w/ some of the earlier negative reviews -- i think that musically, this album is probably weaker than OPM. the hooks get tiresome pretty quickly, and it's lacking the intricate, layered musical material that made OPM so unique. the sung refrain portions seem pretty forced, but skinner's spoken delivery is as slick and unpredictable as ever.

the disc has some definite strong points, but also some reasonably mediocre ones. the concept album approach works, i think. only 1-2 of the tracks work well as stand-alone songs, but as a total album, i can certainly recommend it.

Unique and insightful July 14 2004

When I first put this into my CD player, I was a bit apprehensive, as I am with all albums the first time I listen to them. Very soon thereafter, however, I realized I was listening to an excellent collection of music. Some may argue the differences between "A Grand don't come for Free" and its predecessor the breakthrough "Original Pirate Material" I believe that the two are quite different, but one is not necessarily better than the other. The only thing I dislike about this CD is the repetitive nature of the structure of the songs. Each and every song follows the same verse/chorus pattern. Other than this, I found the entire album very enjoyable, especially DRY YOUR EYES, and Blinded by the lights.

Not as Good as Original Pirate Material July 3 2004
Format:Audio CD
(insert title here), in my opinion.

I like 2-step Uk garage beats, but I can't say that I really liked the beats on this album. Some were just too slow and almost mechanical sounding.

Also, Mike Skinner's MC performance does not live up to his work on ORIGINAL PIRATE MATERIAL.
It sounds as if he he has giving up even trying to flow with the beats and many times it sounds as if Skinner is just talking instead of MCing.
Also, the vocals are awkwardly louder than the beats on some of the tracks.

Im a sorry. I like the 2-step garage sound, and I think Skinner has the ability to be a good MC; but I just don't think that he shined or MCed with any enthusiasm on this one.

This album, in my opinion would be a 3. (Which is okay.) Whereas, I would give OPM a 4.75.

Also, I love concept albums, which this is about trying to retrieve $1000, but I have read in other online reviews comparing this to Prince Paul's PRINCE AMOUNG THIEVES; but really, this album does not have the story construction, skits, vast number of characters, and complexity of Prince Paul's album.

I would recommend:
Skinner's 1st album- Orginal Pirate Material.
Or, if you like the UK 2-step garage sound with a MC over it (that is available on Amazon), I would check out Dizzee Rascal's - BOY IN DA CORNER or Wiley's - TREDDIN ON THIN ICE
Or if you're a vinyl monster, I would check out the Ends.
