Book Description

Sep 20 2011
In this remarkably gripping memoir, one of the most dynamic and controversial leaders of modern times gives us a firsthand account of his years in office and beyond.

Here, for the first time, Tony Blair recounts his role in shaping our recent history, from the aftermath of Princess Diana's death to the war on terror. With rare honesty and courage, he recounts the belief in ethical intervention that led to his decision to go to war in Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Afghanistan, and, most controversial of all, Iraq.

Filled with fascinating revelations about Blair's close friendship with the Clinton family, his admiration for George W. Bush, and his relationship with Barack Obama, A Journey is a must-read political memoir, providing an unprecedented glimpse into Tony Blair's experiences as Prime Minister, through his own eyes.

In his expansive new introduction, Tony Blair discusses his vision of a future based on open-mindedness, yet fully couched in the complex realities of our times.

A Financial Times Best Book
Shortlisted for the Galaxy National Book Awards – Tesco Biography of the Year

“You cannot help but commiserate, for this is a man (unlike some other world leaders) who has clearly grappled with his conscience. . . . Engaging.”
—The Globe and Mail

“I cannot recall a previous memoir by a head of state that is intellectually and emotionally engaging on so many pages.”
—The Christian Science Monitor

“Engrossing. . . . Blair writes honestly and openly. . . . It is breezy, informal and candid enough to keep the reader thoroughly engaged. . . . Blair is admirably frank and tough-minded.”
—The New York Times Book Review

"A hugely entertaining read…. All very Blair, all very British."
The Wall Street Journal

"A Journey is first and foremost a political biography, and… Feelings, authenticity and emotional intelligence are qualities that rank high in Blair's political lexicon. Blair… is one of the great politicians of this generation and that makes his candid moments particularly interesting."
Los Angeles Times

"A very good book… Just as Casanova wrote memoirs boasting of his amorous conquests, Tony Blair loves telling us about his political seductions. This makes his book exceptionally enjoyable and useful: it shows how politics is actually done."
The Telegraph (UK)

"What makes [Blair's] memoir so absorbing… is that he is the first of a generation of politicians to conduct their craft as if observing themselves from an amused and admiring distance - and then to write about it."
The Independent

"[A Journey] offers a fascinating account of his path to leadership. Blair opens compelling vistas on his path to leadership: his triumphs (Northern Ireland and Kosovo), his difficulties (the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan), his challenges (intrigues within his party, especially his successor Gordon Brown), and companions on his journey (including George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, Nicolas Sarkozy and the Queen) between 1997 and 2007."
Harvard Business Review

5.0 out of 5 stars "Soul Searching Memoir" Jan 20 2012
Format:Hardcover
A Journey: My Political Life Hard Copy. A gift from a friend.

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair has written an amazing soul searching read. A memoir by a head of state. Intellectually and emotional. Heartfelt and at times gripping. Fair but tough-minded. Reading about Blair's life is truly an entertaing book.

From his personal victories as prime minister through his personal difficulties and all his other challenges in between, Blair is a charismatic personality that carries over even in print.

A book I enjoyed very much and think you will as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Typical of the genre Nov 14 2011

I read a great many biographies, both authorised and unauthorised.
As you know, most political auto-biographies have two primary attributes: they are self-serving and an attempt at revisionist history to better enshrine their legacy. This book is no exception.
Mr Blair does write well (if this is indeed his writing), and the book gives a good insight into politics as practised by Mr Blair.

4.0 out of 5 stars The highs and lows of a media savvy politico Nov 2 2010
By Vlad Thelad TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
Tony Blair's aptly titled autobiography, covers his journey from knowing where the public was and acting in synch with it, to, despite knowing, doing what he thought was right.
Beyond the many contentious decisions he made, Iraq being the most salient, lays a re-definition of politics on many levels. Beyond ideology and left-right dichotomies, Blair shaped the politics of the Third Way. A liberal in the best sense, Blair was the main architect of New Labour, and in so being his contribution transcended British politics. From conceptualizing to pitching a platform, from broad outlines to policy specifics, he most certainly contributed to shaping progressive politics for the 21st century. Blair was, and is, unapologetic in his defence of the universality of the "western" values of individual freedoms, liberal democracy and free market economy.
One of the most entertaining ingredients of this book is Blair's reactions to the challenges of politics in the age of 24/7 media. On all fronts, from his own love-hate relationship with the media, with his coexisting shrewdness and naïveté, to the role of his advisers, the impossibility of differentiating personal and political affairs, or the prevalence of scandal over policy discussion, he captures the challenges in all its dimensions. A clear account emerges of the trade-offs of access to information, transparency and media dissemination on one hand, and the insatiable appetite for dirt digging of most media, on the other.
If after reading the book you find yourself inclined to venture a guess about Blair's measure of sincerity or truthfulness, I will leave that judgement call to you... For me, it is always fascinating to read first-hand accounts of contemporary events from those in a position to shape them.
