3.0 out of 5 stars THE LOWLIEST OF ALL QUEEN ALBUMS. Oct. 27 1998
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I have been a devout Queen fan since 1980, and I greatly enjoy their music, along with many of their solo efforts. With the exception of "One Vision", which I consider to be their best song of the '80s not found on The Game, this album is discontinuous and lacks real charm. Overall it left me cold. The "rocker" cuts weren't all that gripping, and the soft songs were somewhat trite. The Miracle was a step back in the right direction, and Innuendo was, in richness and song writing quality, a true to their haydays from '73 through '80--Mercury's swan song.

5.0 out of 5 stars A kind of magic Aug. 29 2010
Format:Audio CD
Brilliant album. It's a combination of a soundtrack and a everyday normal album (not's that this a normal album). This is a great album with the title track A Kind of Magic and other brilliant songs like One Vision, friends will be friends, who want's to live forever and Princes of the Universe this makes the album. But the other songs are good as well and they are something slightly different than usual.
This is a combination of a fast rock album and a highlander album. One of the best albums.
Brilliant album buy it

3.0 out of 5 stars It's not that bad, but not that good March 5 2010
Format:Audio CD
First of all, Queen was an awesome band during the 70's. They were writing immortal masterpieces like «A Night At The Opera», «Sheer Heart Attack», «News Of The World», etc.

During the 80's they really got into pop and most of their songs of that period sound old nowadays. They probably had a big impact during that time but when people think of Queen, they think about their 70's masterpieces.

The problem about this album is that even if the songs are not badly written, they are extremely cheesy and Queen were trying too hard to get inspired by what was influential that period. In addition to that, the songs were still having the same problems as the songs that appear in «The Works», they get you easily bored. One Vision, for example, is a really mediocre rock song inspired by the cheesy rock of the 80's.

The good point about A Kind Of Magic is that they got a little bit better. «Hot Space» was bad, «The Works» was boring. They are also good moments in the album. The song «Who Wants To Live Forever» for example is really impressive vocally. There are also good moments even if the most boring songs of the album.

After that, The Miracle, got a little bit better than A Kind Of Magic but Innuendo is their best since «The Game».

Would I recommend «A Kind Of Magic»? I don't think so, but would I tell you to never check what it is about? I don't think so. The good parts are worth to be heard at least once, but the album is forgetable.

3.0 out of 5 stars Who Wants It? July 16 2004
Format:Audio CD
This album starts with a two good tracks "One Vision" which is quite a rocking track! "A Kind of Magic" is pop music. "Friends Will Be Friends" is a peaceful track and in my opinion the best track in this album. "Who Wants to Live Forever" is a peaceful track too. It is also almost like classic music. "Gimme the Prize" is a very fast track, almost like heavy music. "Princes of the Universe" is one of the best tracks in this album too. I like the lyrics, they are so ambitious.

4.0 out of 5 stars Queen on the upswing July 4 2004
By Alan
Format:Audio CD
After 1977's "News Of The World", there wasn't a Queen album that I really, thoroughly enjoyed. The ones since then had their high points, but "News Of The World" was the last one I really enjoyed. "A Kind Of Magic" is, for me, the beginning of Queen on the upswing -- this album, and the ones after it, are much better (IMHO) than the albums they released after 1977.
Ironically, the first time I heard "A Kind Of Magic", I didn't like it. At all. But after listening to it a bit I gained an appreciation for it, and now consider it to be one of their better albums. It's not quite up there with most of their 70's material, but it's a step in the right direction and a good piece of work. Followed by "The Miracle", the superb "Innuendo", and "Made In Heaven".

3.0 out of 5 stars A Musicians review of this album... May 10 2004
Format:Audio CD
Queen has always been praised for it's diverse and individualized songwriting talents and putting them together to make a 'cohesive' product. "A Kind Of Magic" is the one Queen album where that 'magic' didn't quite work out as well as it could have.
My opinion on "Magic" is that I enjoy the tracks individually... But each of them sound so completely different (drastically in style/mixing-production) that it makes the 'album' itself hard to swallow. Though each song is unique and great on their own, they unfortunately do not flow well together throughout.
As a musician, I believe the reason is due to the use of 2 different producers which made for unconsistent mixing and recording techniques. With all of Queens albums, the way the tracks were recorded was what made their diversity flourish.
Here the songs are well written and catchy... with great hooks, great vocal parts, and great instrumental work. In a way, this album would have been more effective if it were divided into two EP's.. one for the soundtrack music, and another for the album-only tracks.
So I gave this album 3 stars. I enjoy the songs themselves but I really have to be in a specific mood to listen to the whole album.
Try it out and see what you think.. No matter what, you'll like the songs! ;o)
All the best, The AndyMan!
