Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Ever since she was a teenager, performance artist and author Carlip (Queen of the Oddballs: And Other True Stories from a Life Unaccording to Plan) has been collecting strangers' lost shopping lists and imaging the lives and people behind them. With the help of expertly applied makeup and outlandish costumes, Carlip has turned herself into the men and women that she imagined. From a wife-seeking, Fu Manchu–mustached redneck to an octogenarian stand-up comic, a washed-up lesbian rock star to a 20-something goth boy, Carlip takes inspiration from both the mundane—potatoes—and the disturbing—mousetraps, cheese, mouse. The 26 vivid photographic portraits and accompanying narratives display the author's humor, grace and a brilliantly creative eye. Carlip's alter egos are larger than life and twice as entertaining. Fans of Sloane Tanen's Bitter with Baggage Seeks Same should flock to this hilarious, delightful, unique achievement. (Mar.)

Review

“Carlip’s curriculum vitae reads like a Cliffsnotes version of american popular culture.”   —The New York Times

"I wish I had thought of this idea —I'm so jealous. I don't know which is better —seeing the actual shopping lists or seeing Hillary in disguise. This book is a real find. Add it to your shopping list. It's on mine, right under Glue Wands and Greens for Dusty."  —Amy Sedaris

Quirky Fun! Oct 20 2008
By Luanne Ollivier #1 HALL OF FAME TOP 10 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
The Secret Lives of Grocery Shoppers --

Okay, this was just one of those absolutely quirky fun books I had to share.

Hillary Carlip started collecting shopping lists she found as a teenager. This book is the result of that collection. She has taken each list and based on the items listed, the notepaper used and the handwriting, has concocted a story for the twenty six lists in the book. If that wasn't enough, she then becomes each character and is photographed in a shopping environment that matches the list. The transformations are quite spectacular. Take a look at the cover again - those are all Carlip!

Fans of Tracey Ullman or The Office would appreciate the humour in this book!

Loved it! Jun 11 2008
By J. Ford
Format:Hardcover
Hillary Carlip is brilliant. I loved this book! It was like a great night at the theater in the form of a book of photographs. Like a funny, smart one woman show, full of insight and compassion... with characters derived from found grocery lists. (Bravo!)

I had read her other book "Queen of the Oddballs," and loved it too, so was really looking forward to this one. And she outdid herself! Talk about inspired.

Nothing Like It! Jun 9 2008
Format:Hardcover
This book is so much fun. Hillary Carlip imagines and transforms into these amazing characters - heartbreaking, hilarious, so recognizable, but so unique. This book makes a great gift, and it's made sure that I will never look at my own or anyone else's grocery list the same way again! It makes you think about the every day details of our lives, and appreciate how the people we pass in the Loblaws make it through their days. HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.
