Product Description

In his prologue, John Fowles tells us that "A Maggot" began as a vision he had of five travellers riding with mysterious purpose through remote countryside. This image gives way to another - a hanging corpse with violets stuffed in its mouth - which leads us into a maze of beguiling paths and wrong turnings, disappearances and revelations, unaccountable motives and cryptic deeds, as this compelling mystery swerves towards a starling vision at its centre. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

About the Author

John Fowles won international recognition with The Collector, his first published title, in 1963. He was immediately acclaimed as an outstandingly innovative writer of exceptional imaginative power. This reputation was confirmed with the appearance of his subsequent works including The Aristos, The Magus, The French Lieutenant's Woman, The Ebony Tower, Daniel Martin, Mantissa and A Maggot. John Fowles died in 2005. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book!, Aug 29 2001
This review is from: A Maggot (Paperback)
This is one of the best books that I've read. I enjoyed The Magus very much, but A Maggot proved to be even better. A mixture of history, religion, sex and weird structure, the novel actually opens much deeper questions of religion, sense of life, or emancipation of women. I took this novel to read it while on holiday, but I finished it in two days and every other book I tried to read afterwards seemed boring.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Must See Behind the Curtain, Aug 14 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: A Maggot (Paperback)
As both a Friend and a scientific UFO investigator, I was amazed at Fowles ability to describe an event we would interpret technologically, through the eyes of an uneducated eighteenth century woman. Other readers may regret Fowles inclusion of the "SciFi" material, but that was reason for the book, along with the display of the Church of England as despot. Who knows how many Christian sects and other religions were influenced by scientifically unexplainable events that continue to occur today.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disturbing depiction of religion, Mar 11 2000

This review is from: A Maggot (Paperback)
I enjoyed this book, although it has been at least fifteen years since I first read it. It involves the investigation of odd occurrances in England in the time prior to the emergence of certain non-conformists sects which later planted themselves in America. The Orthodox investigators have an encounter with spirits and have to determine whether they are demons or angels. The book is rather disjointed, but interesting in trying to depict the scientific investigation of spiritual matters in the context of the struggle in the English church at the time.
