Product Description

Review

A Man Apart follows the lead of numerous vigilante movies that have come down the pike since Charles Bronson first began knocking off bad guys. Vin Diesel's Sean Vetter and his wife live beachside, have their friends over for BBQs, and dance by the sunset -- a virtual guarantee she'll be offed in the first 15 minutes. F. Gary Gray's talents directing action could have distinguished the film after this reliable (if predictable) setup, but only a few scenes contain memorable staging. In one, Vetter and Larenz Tate's Demetrius Hicks trap a perp in an attic, and have to convince the guy to come down peacefully rather than blast them through the floorboards. Vetter's instability is memorably showcased in this taut sequence, but sadly, that constitutes a momentary flicker of inspiration in an otherwise tired tale of mercenary methods used to fight the drug war. For a film whose title underscores the main character's anguish, A Man Apart offers few scenes of Vetter mourning his wife in any poignant way. This may point to Diesel's limitations as an actor more than the screenwriter's wishes, but what we get is a lot of Diesel grabbing people by the lapels. The movie skips sadness and heads straight to anger, where it sits there and stews in its own juices. This creative choice could have worked, but Diesel isn't captivating enough to pull it off. As for the subject matter, Gray seems interested in a realistic look at how police break up drug rings, but most of these sting operations are carried out by just Diesel and Tate, which cuts realism off at the knees. Even the ever-dependable Timothy Olyphant doesn't make much more impact than a few smirks and snide remarks. ~ Derek Armstrong, All Movie Guide

Synopsis

A cop teams up with the former head of a drug cartel to avenge the death of the woman he loved in this action-drama. Sean Vetter (Vin Diesel) and Demetrius Hicks (Larenz Tate) are a pair of DEA agents who think they've made the bust of a lifetime when they capture 'Memo' Lucero (Geno Silva), a multi-millionaire drug lord who controlled most of the narcotics traffic along the border of Mexico and the United States. However, with Lucero behind bars, a new and decidedly more dangerous underworld kingpin rises to take his place, and Diablo (Timothy Olyphant), also known as Hollywood Jack Slayton, soon proves to be even more dangerous than Lucero when he orders his gunmen to assassinate Vetter. While Vetter escapes unharmed, his wife is killed, and Vetter is thrown deep into despair. Now Vetter is obsessed with bringing Diablo to justice, and he's willing to do anything to bring him down -- even if it means teaming up with Lucero. ~ Mark Deming, All Movie Guide

(REAL NAME)
This bluray disc version of this film is great. Great clarity on bright parts of the movie and darker scenes and is exact fit to the 16x9 plasma/lcd's with no bars on top or bottom. Sond is also highly superb.

A Man Apart

A 2009 Alliance Home Video release

My star rating for this blu-ray release is actually a 4.5 outta 5 to be exact. Even though it doesn't have any special features, for the low price of this release this is an easy recommendation from me.

Video: 1080p, 1.78:1 aspect ratio, 1h 45min
Audio: English 5.1 DTS HD-MA, English and French 5.1 dolby digital tracks

This movie surprised me. I was expecting a really cheesy action film, but it was actually better than that. Don't get me wrong, it's not a perfect movie but it's a darn good one. It was a very predictable movie though, so don't go into it thinking there's a mind-boggling thriller story to this one. I enjoyed this one for the most part. This is a definite re-watch for me. Very entertaining.

Picture quality...wow...it was...wow. First, a few minor 'problems'. There were a couple brief shots that could've looked a little bit better (brightness, detail), there was some very, very light grain that popped up for a few quick shots, and there were a couple of black specs that popped up the odd rare time. So those are very, VERY minor complaints. With that aside, the video presentation was absolutely amazing. Detail was fabulous. Colours were excellent. Blacks and whites were perfect. I was not expecting this movie to look THIS good. By far Alliance's best blu-ray release to date. Phenomenal job. 4.5 outta 5

Audio was great. Not much to say in this department. It was a typical sounding mild-action film I thought. The lossless track was better than the dolby track no doubt. This track suits the movie really well. One thing that could've been a bit better was maybe having the rear speakers become more lively at times. Even with that said though, this release has really nice audio. 4 outta 5

No subtitles (expect for some french subtext that can pop-up when english writing comes on the screen)
No extras.
