I'm a real fan of Anathema, and this album has them at their atmospheric, thoughtful best.
I discovered the band last year and was initially puzzled why they are so little known, and why none of my friends liked this record when I played it to them, but now I have worked it out:
It's because the music, and especially the lyrics, are miserable, miserable, miserable; and you probably need a melancholic personality to appreciate them.

I love it though. I've played this album over and over and I'm still not bored of it.

I've been searching for some new music to play because I'm a classic rock man and I stumbled upon Anathema, and holy cow, this album is soo melodic and even rocks. Now I'm hooked on Anathema's latest 4 albums, I'm not a fan of their Death Metal days, which pretty muched sucked, yep, their first albums sucked. Now they just rock and the songs are actually catchy. Each song is just amazing, especially the first half of the album. Add this one to your collection, and look forward to more Anathema releases, they have potential to be classic.

Fans of Anathema are a cult on to themselves. Imagine following a band for 8 years, a band that most people react to with an indifferent `who'. Play one of their songs for the average listener and the comparisons will flow - Dream theatre, Type O negative, Kurt Kobain, and so on, that totally forget to give them credit for their own unique sound. Their lyrics sometimes make Kurt sound like a cheerleader on uppers, and their music is always distinctively, brooding in a Heathcliffe, gothic kind of way. Sometimes lushly lyrical and sometimes with emotions expressed in a spare, esoteric manner, Anathema can be impossibly nuanced, but you have to buy into their music because it is not mainstream, and not even the sort that people will instinctively like. Anathema fans are born, not made, and they are the sorts who dress in black, read Herman Hesse and scoff at Mainstream rock.
