I don't have all the personal history of this band, and with all the many interests I have in music, I don't have time to really delve into it. If Hooverphonic switched singers I wouldn't know it.
I can tell you what I do know, which is this: I have this album, Blue Wonder and The Magnificant...and by far this is the best of the three. BWPM has one of the male band members sing on some of the tracks, which splits the album ala Waldeck and simply detracts from what you want to listen to Hooverphonic for in the first place (which is airy, sweeping soundscapes that take you on an inner trip). TMT is a little underdeveloped and sounds almost poppish.
But this album nails it, hands down. The whole thing, from the very first track to the last soaring chorus is perfect trip-hop/electronica listening. It is hard to find new stuff to listen to in this vein of music, being as there are few (if any) venues to be able to listen to new stuff(for those of us on a budget) but this one belongs up there with the best (Estheros 'breath from another', PH's 'Dummy', Morcheeba's 'Big Calm') of the genre. The only other compliment that I can think to give to this album is this: there is no song worth skipping on this cd. You will want to hear it from one end to the other without touching the player once.
If you love new music, you owe it to yourself to check this one out.

People are quick to compare singers/musicians to other more well-knowns in the business for some reason, then turn around and bash them for it as if they had a personal vendetta out for them. It really ticks me off because it doesn't allow music lovers like me to listen with discernment and an open-mind. Instead, I prejudge. Luckily, I'm not so weak-minded as to listen to the criticisms of others and allow myself to be the judge. Well, for all the folks who compare(d) Hooverphonic to Portishead, this group DOES NOT sound anything like them! In fact, after picking up the incredible "A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular" seven years later after its release, I found the sound to be just as fresh and contemporary in 2003. I absolutely loathe "dated" sounding music...it shows that the artist is just making music that appeals to "the now", and not for generations to come. Hooverphonic--along with folks like DJ Shadow, Boards of Canada, Amon Tobin, Prince and yes, Portishead, have all done masterful jobs of making music that will sound good even 20 years from now--they're called classics! Something Hooverphnic has created with "A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular!"

A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular is a very different CD from the rest of the Hooverphonic albums. This is due to the fact that when this album was recorded there was a different female lead vocal. Blue Wonder Power Milk was the first Hooverphonic CD I bought then I bought this one. I hadn't listened to this CD is years. I just started listening to it and found that it is soooooooo much better than the later albums. This is not to say I do not like Geike Arnaert... I do...but something changed when she took over vocals. The music changed. This CD is much more mellow and relaxing and the tracks flow together better. Liesje Sadonius' voice is much more soothing and soft. I could listen to it all day long. Over time, the albums became more fast paced...especially the new CD. (Jackie Cane) This CD is a must have for anyone who likes Hooverphonic or is just starting to listen to them. It is almost like A New Stereophonic Sound...was recorded by a different band. It is definitely worth it.

"A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular" was my first Hooverphonic cd. An acquaintence of mine recommended me Hooverphonic when I told her I was a big fan of electronica music. I bought this particular cd when I came across it in the used cd bins three years ago. I haven't listened to it for awhile and that is because I thought their following two albums were better, not that "A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular" was bad by all means. I just preferred the band's second and third albums. "A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular" is a bit darker musically and lyrically in comparison to "Blue Power Wondermilk" and "The Magnificent Tree". "Inhaler" and "2 Wicky" bears a striking resemblence to Massive Attack with its deep trip hop beats. Vocalist Liesje Sadonius reminds me of Ruth-Ann (ex-Olive vocalist) with her smooth, seductive vocals as well as the singer from Morcheeba. People might compare Hooverphonic to Portishead but to be honest, I fail to hear the comparison. At least with their debut album, I think Hooverphonic is more in tuned with Bristol legends Massive Attack, namely with the dark, heavy beats of "Inhaler" and "2 Wicky". All the songs on this album are good but I must say that I have a soft spot for "Inhaler" in particular. With the weather getting colder, "A New Sterophonic Sound Spectacular" is the ideal cd to throw into the stereo on a chilly autumn night like tonight. Putting "A New Stereophonic Sound Spectacular" into the stereo for me is like putting on an old favorite pair of socks that I haven't worn in a long time. It just feels good.
