Book Description

Dec 7 2000
Ten years ago Zana Muhsen escaped from the life of slavery in the Yemen into which her father had sold her as a child bride, leaving behind her baby son, her sister Nadia, and Nadia's two small children. As she described so powerfully in her internationally bestselling book SOLD, Zana made a solemn vow to Nadia that she would do everything she possibly could to obtain their freedom as well.

A PROMISE TO NADIA will tell the extraordinary story of those ten years; of the family's lone campaign against the Yemeni authorities; of the refusal of their own government in London to help; and of the despair that forced them into a desperate deal with an unofficial military-style organisation specialising in the recovery of abducted children.

Nadia's story is one that needs to be heard and read by everyone. It is an incredible story of a young woman and her sister and mother's journey through absolute hell. Every woman needs to read this book. This is a story that will stick with you for years, it leaves a huge impact and is an issue that needs attention. A quick, easy read. Appropriate for older teens (maybe grade 11 and up) and would generate some very powerful and intense classroom discussions.

"A Promise to Nadia" is Zana Muhsen's follow-up to her best-selling book, Sold. In her latest book she writes about her and her mother's plight to bring her sister home, out of slavery safely. The story is at times sad and even tragic, but it is also uplifting and inspirational. This is one of the most riveting and detailed books that I have ever read. I hope one day Zana will write a new book to update readers on Nadia. Anyone who is studying world events, geography and especially the Middle East will certainly appreciate this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars this should never happen July 14 2010

This heart wrenching story should never have to be told. Through the courage of "Nadia" it is. WE feel the pain of a girl lost and sold into a culture she does not understand and that can never be her own. We see her struggle for freedom against unsurmountable odds. Nadia is indeed a modern day hero. We as a people need to open our eyes and look after one another so this thing can never happen.
