DEAR MUSIC APPRECIATORS,
By Andrew H. Lee "Constant Listener" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: A Retrospective (Audio CD)
Dear Music Appreciators,Greetings to the music-loving romantics of Portland, Oregon! Pink Martini fans are scattered throughout the world of course, but those who live (or have lived) in The Rose City simply have a special place in their hearts for this sparkling gem of a musical group. Released digitally earlier this month and now finally available in a lovely, "you can actually hold it in your hands," book-like, collectorish edition, this is the first Pink Martini compilation, and it represents the group's recorded career with something from each of the six studio albums as well as nine previously unreleased tracks. This accomplishes the neat trick of simultaneously offering a collection of both familiar and new music in an effort to draw in fans from all the phases and stages of Pink Martinidom. The song choices are heavily slanted (more than half) toward the group's first two albums, seeming to suggest that Pink Martini does not place as high a value on their more recent work. Or perhaps this is an intentional effort to give the fans the songs that the group thinks they might want most, along with some new stuff thrown in for good measure. Regardless, this is all vibrant, beautiful music. If you are just jumping on the Pink Martini bandwagon, be assured that if you are a relatively intellectual, music-and-dance-loving romantic with a taste for the international, you will surely find something to love here. Also, be aware that due to song choice and arrangement, this compilation album will likely whet rather than satisfy your appetite for this group and you'll find yourself handing over even more money to get some of their studio recordings as well - which is the mark of a great album, compilation or not. I hope you will find the following statistics helpful: Number of songs from SYMPATHIQUE = 5 Number of songs from HANG ON LITTLE TOMATO = 7 (including two different versions of Una Notte a Napoli) Number of songs from HEY EUGENE! = 1 Number of songs from SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS = 2 Number of songs from JOY TO THE WORLD = 1 Number of songs from 1969 = 1 Total number of previously unreleased tracks = 9 (Pink Martini's website claims the number is eight, but I think they forgot to count "Ma Solitude" with Georges Moustaki) Number of previously unreleased tracks that do not appear in any form on a studio album = 4 Be aware that the Amazon.com track listing for the CD version of this album is incorrect on multiple counts (though the MP3 track listing is correct). The album actually contains 21 tracks, and Amazon forgot to list track 10 - "Mas Que Nada." Also, Georges Moustaki's vocal performance on "Ma Solitude" is incorrectly attributed to Saori Yuki. Sincerely, Constant Listener 5 of 5 people found the following review helpful

Not a Trace of 'Red 40',
By Rudy Palma "The Writing Fiend" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: A Retrospective (Audio CD)
This is a nifty compilation of some of Pink Martini's choicest tunes, ideal both for avid fans of the mercurial musicians or for business owners merely seeking an ideal 70-plus minute disc of heady background sounds to lure customers into their establishments. While "A Retrospective" does not necessarily contain all of Pink Martini's best work - all the better to get the casual fans to look toward the back catalogue - it works in providing an excellent, well-oiled sampling of the sprawling range of the group, with nearly all their thus-far conceived sonic palletes well-represented throughout the 21 tracks. Some non-instrumental which feature vocalist China Forbes' vocals upfront in the mix, such as the oddball, pretentious "Hey Eugene," do not fit in as well or measure up to the quality of softer, more meditative sounds ("Aspettami," "Kikuchiyo to Mohshimasu"). However, such is often the case with compilations. The 13-member orchestra have certainly carved out an esteemed niche for themselves among record buyers who enjoy their genuine versatility, cool, lush sounds, world music beats and eclecticism. "A Retrospective" is therefore not only a compilation for the casual listener but a celebration of Pink Martini's success in a fickle music industry. Until Pink Martini returns with a new full-length effort, "A Retrospective" should tide over listeners nicely. 7 of 9 people found the following review helpful
