Product Description

“The Devil was about to be tamed.” Her name is Hannah Reid. Born a commoner, she has been Duchess of Dunbarton ever since she was nineteen years old, the wife of an elderly duke to whom she has been rumored to be consistently and flagrantly unfaithful. Now the old duke is dead and, more womanly and beautiful than ever at thirty, Hannah has her freedom at last. And she knows just what she wants to do with it. To the shock of a conventional friend, she announces her intention to take a lover — and not just any lover, but the most dangerous and delicious man in all of upper-class England: Constantine Huxtable. Constantine’s illegitimacy has denied him the title of earl, so now he denies himself nothing . . . or so the ton would have it. Rumored to be living the free and easy life of a sensualist in his country estate, he always chooses recent widows for his short-lived affairs. Hannah will fit the bill nicely. But once these two passionate and scandalous figures find each other, they discover that it isn’t so easy to extricate oneself from the fires of desire — without getting singed. For the duchess and the dark lord each have startling secrets to reveal, and when all is said and done, neither will be able to say which one fell in love first, who tamed whom, and who has emerged from this game of hearts with the stronger hand.

3.0 out of 5 stars Huxtable, Book Five, Jun 6 2010

This review is from: A Secret Affair (Hardcover)
Hannah Reid, Duchess of Dunbarton, had adored her elderly husband during their ten years of marriage. Of course, no one would have believed it had they known. Many believed Hannah married the duke for his fortune and that the men who had often escorted Hannah to events were her lovers. Now that Hannah's year of mourning is over, she has become the thoroughly enviable female creature known as a widow of wealth and superior social standing. Hannah is determined to continue on as her late duke had taught her. Other than her continued childhood friendship with Miss Barbara "Babs" Leavensworth, Hannah never looks back, only forward. The London Season is about to begin and Hannah plans to take her first paramour. Though he did not know it, Mister Constantine "Con" Huxtable would be that gentleman.

Every year Con chooses a new mistress to dally with during the Season. Normally the Duchess of Dunbarton would never have been on his mental list of wanted lovers, but Hannah has managed to alter that. Slowly, and without even realizing it themselves, Hannah and Con open up to each other. They begin to understand each other and their pasts as few truly ever do. They may even be able to accomplish the impossible - heal all past wounds.

*** THREE STARS! This is the last story about a member of the Huxtable family. Though I dreaded the series to end, it had to happen eventually. The duchess came across cold as ice in the beginning. As more of her past was revealed, I understood why that was so. The author did a superior job of peeling back the multiple layers of this character's personality and showing her various sides. However, Con's character remained too stiff and bland for my liking.

Characters from past titles appear in cameos. It was nice to see how they were fairing. I found this story to have more bedroom scenes than the previous titles. Do not expect a lot of danger and suspense. The story keeps focused on the two main characters' affair and pasts. Therefore, this is a slow paced tale. I do not believe this is the best work of the author's, but it is still a sweet romance and worth your time. ***

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than I thought it would be, April 12 2011
By
I absolutely adore this series but after the book Seducing an Angel I began to lose faith. Of course then I found out this book was about Con; my favorite character, and I was excited then worried about how it would turn out. Surprisingly, I fell in love with their story and I even liked his love interest.

The only thing I didn't like about this book was the characterization of the characters from the others books were played out. They were absolutely against Hannah! All I wanted to do was yell at the character Simon about how everyone had thought his wife was an axe murderer and he still got tangled up with her.

Overall it was a good book. Some parts of it were... not the best but others were absolutely wonderful and made up for it. I definitely give this book a buy and I'd read it again!

4.0 out of 5 stars Indulge and Be Delighted !!!, Mar 19 2011
By
As Mary Balogh has been want to do, she again brought me to tears and laughter in this tale of Hannah and Constantine.
I thoroughly enjoyed this Huxtable story, and loved the fact that I was familiar with some of the characters.
Constantine's brother John's life and death, was extremely moving. (mega kleenex used there).
You must read this book. Indulge and Be Delighted !!
