A Short Guide to a Long Life explores the simple idea that a healthy tomorrow starts with good habits today.” (Fortune)

Product Description

The New York Times bestselling book of simple rules everyone should follow in order to live a long, healthy life, featuring illustrations throughout, from the author of The End of Illness.

In his international bestseller, The End of Illness, Dr. David B. Agus shared what he has learned from his work as a pioneering cancer doctor, revealing the innovative steps he takes to prolong the lives of not only cancer patients, but all those who want to enjoy a vigorous, lengthy life. Now Dr. Agus has turned his research into a practical and concise illustrated handbook for everyday living.

A Short Guide to a Long Life is divided into three sections (What to Do, What to Avoid, and Doctor’s Orders) that provide the definitive answers to many common and not-so-common questions: Who should take a baby aspirin daily? Are flu shots safe? What constitutes “healthy” foods? Are airport scanners hazardous? Dr. Agus believes optimal health begins with our daily routines. His book will help you develop new patterns of personal health care, using inexpensive and widely available tools that are based on the latest and most reliable science.

An accessible and essential handbook for preparing for visits to the doctor and maintaining control of your future, “A Short Guide to a Long Life explores the simple idea that a healthy tomorrow starts with good habits today” (Fortune).

Agus has compiled a well written list of life's do's and don'ts that, if followed would lead to longer, happier and healthier lives for all of us. He really drives home the notion that "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure."

Dr Agus has a Beverly Hills practice, and some of the more esoteric medical tests he recommends are for the rich and paranoid and certainly not covered by Ontario's comprehensive Medicare. Having said that, there is a strong emphasis on patient responsibility. There are many important lifestyle issues addressed which are common to all responsible health advisors. Diet, exercise, weight reduction, walking many steps throughout the day with a pedometer, avoiding smoking and excessive drinking--it is all here, with the patient urged to seize control of his body and life and hopefully reduce illness and stay out of the clutches of a Dr Fixit, after the fact. This is an easy to read digest, with updates, of an earlier longer book. Dr Agus has been hawking it on PBS which is how I found it.

Short chapters. Simple explanations and rules to follow that cut through a lot of nonsense. We get so wrapped up in pills, diets, supplements and fads that we forget about the basics. Recommend this read.

An excellent book. I provide psychotherapy to a wide variety of patients and find this book extremely helpful to many of them; particularly younger individuals and couples. A well-grounded reference. Items covered in the book are often about 2-3 pages in length.
