Book Description

April 29 2010
When dynamic, power-dressing Christie blows in like a warm wind to take over their department, five very different women find themselves thrown together at work. But none of them could have predicted the fierce bond of friendship that her leadership would inspire...Anna, 39, is reeling from the loss of her fiance, who ran off with a much younger woman. Her pride in tatters, these days Anna finds it difficult to leave the house. So when a handsome, mysterious stranger takes an interest in her, she's not sure whether she can learn to trust again? Then there's Grace, in her fifties, trapped in a loveless marriage with a man she married because, unable to have children of her own, she fell in love with his motherless brood. Grace worries that Dawn is about to make the same mistake: orphaned as a child, engaged to love-rat Calum, is Dawn more interested in the security that comes with his tight-knit, boisterous family? When a sexy, footloose rock singer catches her eye, will Dawn have the courage to follow her heart? At 28, Raychel is the youngest member of their little gang. And with a loving husband, Ben, and a cosy little nest for two, she would seem to be the happiest. But what dark secrets are lurking behind this perfect facade, that make sweet, pretty Raychel so guarded and unwilling to open up? Under Christie's warm hand, the girls soon realise they have some difficult choices to make. Indeed, none of them quite realised how much they needed the sense of fun, laughter, and loyalty that abounds when five women become friends. It's one for all, and all for one!

About the Author

Five-foot-tall Milly Johnson is a half Barnsley, half Glaswegian writer of greetings cards, novels and shopping lists featuring gin and buns. When not writing she is either reading, learning Italian, mixing with the Yorkshire glitterati, getting up the council's nose about a Dodworth Road Pedestrian Crossing or ironing school clothes. She lives with her two boys and a quartet of mad animals near her Mam and Dad in the middle of Barnsley, South Yorkshire.

5.0 out of 5 stars A lovely summer read! April 27 2010
By Lydia - Novel Escapes TOP 500 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
I don't think there will be anything Milly Johnson writes that I don't enjoy. All of her novels are lovely and unique, even though they may share similar themes, and they all find a place in my heart. This one was no different.

A Summer Fling follows five different women that work together and we watch their friendship slowly evolve as their individual lives become more complicated. Anna has been left in pieces after her fiancé left her at 39, while Dawn, aged 33, is planning her own wedding to a man not worthy of her affection. Raychel, aged 28, seems the happiest, but has dark secrets and Grace, in her 50's, is trapped in a loveless marriage. These women worked together for years yet remained distant until their new manager, Christie, takes over and coaxes them all into coming out of their shells.

I did find the beginning to this novel a tad slow and didn't fully get immersed into the story right away, but seeing as how the story is told from 5 women's perspectives, it only makes sense that it would take some time to get to know each character. Once I did though, I got sucked into the story and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen with these women.

This was a great chick lit novel centering around friendship and encompassing stories of love, finding it in strange places, learning to let go of toxic relationships and finding happiness. Milly Johnson covers such an array of topics and in typical fashion for her, some of the stories she spins aren't chock full of roses. There are heavy topics here and I love this about her work. Her heroines aren't full of sunshine all the time and have real issues, instead of which pair of shoes to buy, which much more realistic than some of the other chick lit out there.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute summer romance June 16 2014

This followed several characters. I like the London setting but some events were unbelieveble. I liked the characters but thought they were a bit obtuse.
4.0 out of 5 stars Good enough... Nov. 29 2013

I liked this book, really. But (you knew that was coming...) the Dawn and Anna story lines were very top heavy whereas the Raychel and Grace tales were threadbare. They both started out interesting but then completely petered out which was disappointing; especially about Grace (which could and should have had so much more info). Christy's also ended with whimper. I "read" this book as an Audible and it was entertaining; however, it was lopsided in turns of storyline balance. A decent beach or cooped up at home read.
4.0 out of 5 stars More of the same from Milly Johnson Oct. 24 2013

I had just finished reading Here Come The Girls, and this novel pretty much follows that same format. We have four female characters and their lives are intertwined via working in the same office. I had a difficult time keeping these women straight in my mind, but after a while this sorted itself out when their personalities became clearer.
I had an "Oh, no" moment when they first mentioned vampires, but fortunately it did not go in that direction.
I hope this author will tackle something a little different, like a single main character, in her next book. While the stories have been entertaining, the similar format is getting boring.
5.0 out of 5 stars So glad I bought this~ April 25 2013

I am so pumped that I took a chance and purchased this book. Milly Johnson had been recommended to me by a fellow book lover and I am so glad I purchased it. It only took me about a year to get around to getting a book by this author (isn't readily available in the US). I loved absolutely every character in this story and love the way that these women's stories overlapped one another and yet each had their own unique storyline. If you love chick lit, especially the UK authors you would absolutely love this book. I am about to try and buy another of Ms. Johnson's books. If you like Jill Mansell and Katie Fforde you will love this quaint novel based in Yorkshire.

The main setting of this story is at an office. At first the Department of Cheese and Department of Bakery I thought were perhaps some type of government Departments, but soon I realized that it is in fact the administration of a retail store. All of our main characters work together in the Bakery Department.

We meet Grace a 50 plus mom of three who twenty-three years ago married a man basically because she fell in love with his children. Grace views work as a place to escape from her unhappy home life. She has passed up two opportunities to take an early retirement, unbeknownst to her husband. Her husband meanwhile is trying desperately to get her to retire and is becoming increasingly upset that the company has passed her time after time for retirement, he's ready to buy a Caravan (RV for us American's) and live out retirement roaming the countryside. We see some really interesting dynamics between the two of them and the rest of her family.

Then we meet Dawn who is about to get married. Dawn was orphaned as a teenager when her parents died tragically in an accident. Dawn's fiance isn't the greatest gent in the world, but she fell in love with his family. Although, now the closer the wedding date gets the more she starts seeing how obnoxious his family is.

Then we meet Raychel who is happily married to Ben. I must admit that there was a point in the story that I didn't know quite how this relationship was going to turn out ok. Ben is an absolute great man and he loves Raychel beyond words. There love is a shining example of what we should all strive for in our own lives. Rachel's childhood was worse than horrible and she has a secret that has plagued her since she was a kid.

Then there's Anne who likes to be in the background. Her fiance recently left her for a young thing and is not only going through a grieving process, but feels completely horrid about herself and the way she looks. She is surprised to catch the attention of someone she thinks is stalking her. Her secret admirer has his sights set on her and is ready to turn her world upside down.

Christie is new to the Bakery Department and suspicions abound when she suddenly comes in as a Department Head. The women however find her a breath of fresh air and her new management style allows them all the opportunity to bond and form lasting friendships. Christie is kinda the glue that holds these women and the storyline together.

This was a long book and I found myself up until four in the morning desperately trying to get to the end. I literally found myself enjoying every word of this story as one might savor each sip of wine.
